ECONOMIC REPORT: Jobless claims rise slightly in latest week; Four-week average reclaims highest level since late April

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- First-time filings for state unemployment benefits rose slightly in the latest week to 318,000, up 2,000 from the previous week but still in a range that suggests healthy job growth.
Initial claims for the week ended June 30 were the highest in two weeks, according to the Labor Department.
Meanwhile, the four-week moving average of new claims climbed to 318,500, up by 1,750 from a week earlier.
It marked the highest reading since the end of April. The four-week average smoothes out distortions caused by weather, holidays and other one-time events.
Also, the number of people continuing to collect unemployment benefits jumped higher, up 84,000 to stand at 2.57 million in the week ended June 23. Continuing claims are now at their highest level since April 14.
The four-week average of continuing claims rose by 9,750, reaching 2.51 million.
The insured unemployment rate -- the percentage of those eligible for benefits who are receiving claims -- rose to 2.0% from 1.9%, the Labor Department's data showed.
Claims for the week ended June 23 were revised to 316,000.
Economists say initial claims in the range of about 300,000 to 325,000 are consistent with job growth of about 100,000 to 150,000 per month.
Consistent levels over the 350,000 mark would signal some weakening in the labor market, while a sustained drop below 300,000 could place further strain on a labor market that's already tight.
Initial claims represent job destruction, while the level of continuing claims indicates how hard or easy it is for displaced workers to find new jobs.
In a separate report Thursday, a survey based on Automated Data Processing payroll reports projected that U.S. private-sector employment grew by a stronger-than-anticipated 150,000 in June. See full story.
Also, outplacement firm Challenger Grey & Christmas said U.S. corporations announced 55,726 layoffs in June, down 22% from May's figure and 17% below the figure from June 2006. The figures are not seasonally adjusted. June is traditionally a slow month for job-cutting announcements, Challenger noted.
