"Analysts Monkey Around With Upgrades"

"Upgrades galore! Many of them are just based on these analysts' need to show that they are cognizant of the big moves out there.

The rush to upgrade Web plays, including Amazon (AMZN - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating), which is simply the dog of the group, is all about showing that analysts aren't missing things.

The aQuantive (AQNT - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) upgrades, excuse me, are just plain embarrassing. The stock would have been up big on Google's (GOOG - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) deal for DoubleClick today, so it's just a pile-on.

Wouldn't it have been better to do it last week? Couldn't it have been predicted? Would that have been more helpful? Duh.

Lam Research (LRCX - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) upgrade? No kidding. Thanks, Bear Stearns. This group runs every day, regardless of the end markets. What analyst can refuse that pull?!?

Or how about the Cott (COT - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) upgrade by Merrill after the stock was up $3? Whatever happened to discipline and pulling back? I guess they are out of style.

Amgen (AMGN - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) upgrade? I don't know; the stock was at $55 last week. But it's still way down from where it was in January, so at least the upgrade can be justified.

The only upgrade that interests me in terms of making money is the Goldman Sachs upgrade of Best Buy (BBY - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating). That's value: The stock is down, it has room to move. The move is smart. It has value added.

Not that "Mad Money" or RealMoney is a research department, but my team and I scrutinize the process of recommendations closely; I'm reluctant ever to talk up stocks that have run. I fear criticism from viewers and the press, because I'm much more scrutinized than these multi-million-dollar research departments.

Mornings like this make me feel old-fashioned, too rigorous.

But then again, at least my team and I can look at ourselves in the mirror. Makes me feel that a monkey could beat these guys. Then again, the only guy ever compared to a monkey is me.

Odd. "
