"Insider selling is picking up! Oh no! Heaven's sakes! Sell everything! Run to the hills!

Oh, please. We are at five-year highs. You want people to be buying their stocks hand over fist now? Where does it say that you can't take profits? Where does it say that's a mistake?

Let's talk about insider activity for a moment. You buy for one reason: You think a stock is going higher. You sell for a million reasons: tax, change of life, a sense that you are too undiversified, because of stock-price appreciation.

If you are freaking out about this stuff, you are nuts. If there is a pattern of excessive selling, then sure, it's a red flag. But some of the best gains in stocks have come after large spates of insider selling.

Don't listen to the sirens. Accept the fact that when you see the S&P 500 at five-year highs, someone will have the good sense to ring the register. "
