Jim Cramer's Stop Trading! Hating Hoku
By TheStreet.com Staff
1/23/2007 2:56 PM EST
It's time to "blow out" of speculative stocks like Hoku (HOKU - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) in the runup to President Bush's speech tonight, Jim Cramer said Tuesday on CNBC's "Stop Trading!" segment.
Cramer said Hoku, the Hawaii-based supplier of material for solar panels that has come into vogue since it scored a supply deal last week with Sanyo, is "trading more than its float" every day -- a signal that the action may not be based purely on the stock's fundamentals. On Tuesday, shares were up 11% in heavy trading as some investors were betting that the president's energy conservation proposals would play to Hoku's favor.
"People are trying to game a speech that isn't gameable," Cramer said of the president's State of the Union address, which is scheduled for 9 p.m. EST.
Cramer also called the ethanol trade "baloney" but said that if he really believed in renewable power talk, he might try Archer Daniels (ADM - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating).

Ethanol stocks rally ahead of State of Union speech
President Bush expected to endorse a rise in ethanol
By Polya Lesova, MarketWatch
Last Update: 12:56 PM ET Jan 23, 2007
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of ethanol producers rallied on Tuesday ahead of President George W. Bush's State of the Union speech tonight in which he's expected to urge for a big increase in the amount of ethanol that refiners mix with gasoline.
The president might call for a rise of over 60 billion gallons of ethanol annually by 2030, according to reports. The ethanol industry received a significant boost after Bush advocated alternative fuels in his 2006 State of the Union address.
Ethanol, an alcohol-based alternative fuel produced from starch or sugar-based feedstocks, has gained popularity in response to rising oil prices and concerns that the United States is overly dependent on imported oil.
Ahead of tonight's presidential speech, the stocks of ethanol producers surged.

Sector Snap: Ethanol Producers Slide
Monday September 25, 1:17 pm ET
Ethanol Producers' Shares Drop Amid Falling Oil Prices
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of ethanol producers tumbled in Monday afternoon trading, as crude oil prices continue to ease and Prudential cut its earnings estimate for Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. due to falling ethanol prices.
Agribusiness giant ADM is one of the young ethanol industry's biggest players. Prudential analyst John M. McMillin said falling prices for ethanol pushed him to cut his earnings estimate for the fiscal year ended June 2008 to a profit $2.75 per share, down from $3.25 per share.
Wall Street overall is looking for $2.97 per share, according to an analyst poll by Thomson Financial. He kept his 2007 estimate at $2.55 per share, compared with the Street's overall view of $2.52.
The analyst also reduced his target price to $45 from $49 for the company in a research note. He reiterated his "Overweight" rating, saying the company could look to purchase some of its ethanol competitors or try to distribute their production.
McMillin said he thinks Archer-Daniels-Midland has already locked in favorable prices of $2.30 per gallon for much of its ethanol production for fiscal 2007. But he sees prices falling back to $1.85 per gallon for the following fiscal year.
Hurting ethanol companies is an increasing amount of supply and falling crude oil prices. A barrel of crude dropped 15 cents to $60.40 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after earlier dipping as low as $59.52. Falling crude prices makes alternative fuel less attractive to customers.
Archer-Daniels-Midland shares tumbled $1.38, or 3.6 percent, to $37.10 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Among other ethanol producers, Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings Inc. fell 52 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $19.73 on the NYSE.
MGP Ingredients Inc. lost $1.38, or 5.9 percent, to $22, and Pacific Ethanol Inc. gave up $1.07, or 7.3 percent, to $13.64, both on the Nasdaq.
VeraSun Energy Corp. slipped 73 cents, or 4.4 percent, to $15.87 on the NYSE.

Ethanol: Live Fast, Die Young, Take Profits
By Jim Cramer
RealMoney.com Columnist
6/15/2006 2:27 PM EDT
It's time to take a bow and clear out of the ethanol stocks -- all of them, and as soon as is reasonable. Use limit orders, sell incrementally -- don't just dump everything at once immediately -- but be aware the ethanol fad is done.
Wednesday VeraSun Energy (VSE:NYSE - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) came public. The stock was up huge from where they priced it. You've gotta sell, and then sell it again. Look, they even had corn outside the New York Stock Exchange -- that's no good.
On Mad Money, we want you to raise less corn and more hell, like Mary Lease, or maybe just raise less corn and more money.
VeraSun is just the first sign you need to sell. Soon Aventine, another ethanol company, will come public, and then Hawkeye. The first company to take itself public in a speculative bubble goes up big -- that's VeraSun. Then the next, be it Hawkeye or Aventine, which are both smaller, more speculative and in the case of Hawkeye, worse plays, goes up a little. Then the third one out on a speculative run turns out to be a dog -- kind of like Vonage (VG:NYSE - commentary - research - Cramer's Take), only not quite as bad. At that point, all of a sudden the market will finally be overwhelmed with sellers of ethanol stocks, and just like anything else, when supply outstrips demand, prices go down.
All these ethanol stocks are up today; now is the time to take profits. Sell into the strength, because it won't last much longer.
Ethanol is in the last stage of a speculative fad's life cycle. I know this because we see it all the time in these hot sectors.
We saw it with the dot-coms in 1999, with the power merchants in 2000, with the oil service names last year and into this year and with solar power. Now ethanol is following the same pattern.

XTHN - ethanol & ambiente !
a minha preferida é:
Xethanol Corp (XTHN) – a empresa vai produzir etanol a partir de resíduos industriais e florestais. O seu modelo de negócio parece mais interessante (a nivel de rentabilidade e ambiental) que a via normal a partir do cultivo do milho & beterraba ...
Claro que baixou um pouco (tal como as outras) mas o mercado parece começar a reconhecer estas vantagens da XTHN, que esta a resistir bem melhor que o resto do sector.
a empresa adquiriu recentemente uma fabrica .

Proposed Purchase of Pfizer Manufacturing Complex Through CoastalXethanol Subsidiary
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 2006--Xethanol Corporation (OTCBB:XTHN - News), a biotechnology driven ethanol company, announced today that its CoastalXethanol subsidiary has signed a letter of intent with Pfizer, Inc. (NYSE:PFE - News) to purchase Pfizer's pharmaceutical manufacturing complex located in Augusta, Georgia. While details are yet to be finalized, CoastalXethanol and Pfizer are working together to complete the transaction.
The state of the art, 40 acre site includes: an 89,100 square foot manufacturing facility, a 25,000 square foot warehouse facility, 7,300 square feet of laboratory space, and 16,000 square feet of offices and conference rooms. CoastalXethanol intends to retrofit the site to produce 35 million gallons per year of ethanol. The facility will produce ethanol from cellulosic and other biomass waste streams generated by industrial producers in the surrounding areas. This biomass-to-ethanol facility will be the first of its kind in the region. In addition, CoastalXethanol may produce biodiesel in this facility under Xethanol's sublicense from H2Diesel, Inc.
A finalized agreement could produce up to 100 new jobs in Augusta, and has been embraced by local governmental agencies. "This is a win-win situation for all companies, and we hope the details can be finalized in the near future and Augusta can become the home of CoastalXethanol's signature plant," said Augusta's Mayor Deke Copenhaver.
Mr. d'Arnaud-Taylor, Chairman and CEO of Xethanol commented: "The proposed purchase and conversion of this facility serves as an excellent template of our strategy of acquiring existing industrial plants and adapting them to produce ethanol and biodiesel. Because of the size and existing infrastructure of this facility, it gives Xethanol an exceptional platform from which to launch its CoastalXethanol production initiative in a meaningful way. We believe this will be the first of several significant acquisitions in the Southeast. Xethanol appreciates Mayor Copenhaver's and Augusta's enthusiasm and assistance. The Mayor and his team were quick to grasp that our waste to ethanol technologies not only create renewable energy in the region, but also help solve waste disposal issues associated with the forestry industry."
About Xethanol Corporation
Xethanol Corporation's goal is to be the leader in the emerging biomass-to-biofuels industry. Xethanol's mission is to optimize the use of biomass in the renewable energy field and convert biomass that is currently being abandoned or land filled into ethanol and other valuable co-products, especially xylitol. Xethanol's strategy is to deploy proprietary biotechnologies that will extract and ferment the sugars trapped in these biomass waste concentrations. Xethanol's strategic value proposition is to produce ethanol and co-products cost effectively with ethanol plants located closer to biomass sources. In Iowa, Xethanol owns two ethanol production facilities, where it is deploying these technologies. For more information about Xethanol, please visit its website at http://www.xethanol.com.

Pennys do ethanol
