WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Reeling from two hurricanes, U.S. nonfarm payrolls fell by an estimated 35,000 in September, the first decline in more than two years, the Labor Department said Friday.
The drop was much less than the 150,000 expected.
Payrolls in July and August were revised higher by a total of 77,000 jobs.
The unemployment rate rose as expected to 5.1% from 4.9%.
The government would not precisely quantify the impact of Hurricane Katrina, but gave a rough estimate of 230,000 lost jobs based on the assumption hiring was normal elsewhere.
Job losses were concentrated in manufacturing, retail and leisure.
