BRUSSELS (AP)--The European Union&aposs head office said Wednesday that it hadn&apost yet received any notification or requests from Rome to help rescue Italian dairy giant Parmalat Finanziaria SpA (PRF.MI) and the nation&aposs milk industry.
"When we get those we will examine them and react as quickly as possible," European Union Commission spokeswoman Antonia Mochan said.
The Italian government said Tuesday that it wanted to appoint a special commissioner to draw up a plan to restructure the company and save jobs. It also said it would ask the Commission to grant "crisis" status to the nation&aposs dairy industry - a move aimed at injecting some fresh cash into the sector.
Mochan refused to comment on whether an announcement from Rome was in line with competition rules for the single European market.
"We need to examine the contents of the decree before we can take a position," she said. "We need to look at the specifics."
