Apple execs "overtly optimistic" about iOS, see tablets outpacing PCs soon

After meeting with Apple executives, Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope reported that the company appeared "overtly optimistic on the long-term prospects for the iOS platform."

Shope met with Apple's chief operations officer Tim Cook, retail head Ron Johnson and chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer.

According to a report by Silicon Alley Insider, while the trio of Apple executives didn't divulge any secret features of the upcoming iOS 5, they did note high expectations for iPads and iPhones.

In his Goldman Sachs note obtained by AppleInsider, Shope noted that Cook "remained remarkably optimistic about the demand for the iPad and the long-term market opportunity for tablets. Indeed, he stated that he sees no reason why the tablet market shouldn’t eclipse the PC market over the next several years."

Apple already sells more iPads than Macs, and the impact the iPad is having on PC sales in general (which are shrinking globally) is making a clear imprint on Microsoft's plans for Windows 8.

Mais uma boa fonte de revenue

Apple Readies iCloud Service

Apple Inc. has reached deals with major recorded-music companies to help launch an online storage service, people familiar with the matter said, an offering called iCloud that Chief Executive Steve Jobs is expected to unveil Monday.

According to these people, Apple has signed deals with Warner Music Group Corp., Sony Corp.'s Sony Music Entertainment and EMI Group Ltd. and expects to sign a fourth with Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group this week.

The agreements will let Apple offer an easy way for consumers to create and listen online to their entire music collections, without the time-consuming work of manually transferring or uploading songs.

Many in the music industry see such offerings as a key next step in the evolution of digital media, in which music, and eventually video, is convenient and ubiquitous.

Apple wouldn't be the first company to offer such a service, but its standing as the world's largest music retailer and more than 200 million iTunes accounts would give it clout that others have lacked.

Google Inc. and Amazon.com Inc., have attempted to create similar services but so far haven't been able to agree on terms with the record labels. If Apple can be the first to do so, that would further tighten its hold over its users, making it more difficult for Google and Amazon to lure them away.

The iCloud service, these people said, is expected to be more robust than those recently introduced by Google and Amazon, which don't have licensing deals with the major labels.

The Cupertino, Calif., company said Tuesday that Mr. Jobs, despite being on medical leave since January, will headline its annual developers conference next Monday in San Francisco. The company, breaking from a tradition of saying little in advance of public events, said it will unveil iCloud as well as new versions of Apple's mobile and Mac operating systems.

Mr. Jobs's appearance at the conference may help ease concerns about his health. Mr. Jobs, who was diagnosed with a rare type of pancreatic cancer in 2004 and had a liver transplant two years ago, went on his second medical leave in two years in January.

Looking good, indeed...

Mas pode ser só window dressing de fecho de mês.

Ou talvez seja algo mais que isso:

Apple Announces iCloud, Steve Jobs WWDC Keynote

Apple has confirmed maybe the worst kept secret in Silicon Valley: It’s been working on a cloud service, and will announce it at the June 6 Worldwide Developers Conference.

So now we know annual developer’s conference will unveil “iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering,” but we don’t know yet what it is, or what exactly will reside at the domain name it may have bought for $4.5 million in April.

iCloud could be the mythical iTunes streaming service, a possibility that is looking increasingly likely now that Apple has most of the major record labels signed up for it, in a space pioneered by Amazon and Google, which has no such deals. Or it could be Apple’s version of DropBox, the amazing sync and storage service that currently glues together the whole iOS ecosystem along with its desktop service.

Or it could be yet another abortion of an internet service, like Mobile Me, iDisk and Ping before it.

Still, this won’t stop endless speculation during the next week, as pundits work up theories like a shaving brush works up a lather from a tiny, almost nonexistent nubbin of soap. And then on Monday — boom — we’ll know for sure.

Apple also said the keynote will be delivered by Steve Jobs, who is currently on medical leave, and that the WWDC will also focus on the new version of OS X 10.7 Lion, and the upcoming iOS 5.

Apple earns the most cash per employee

SHINY TOY FLOGGER Apple has earned enough this year to pay each of its staff $419,528 in profits.
Huge margin mark-ups, not investing capital and devoted fanbois craving to pay a fortune for Coldplay multimedia on over-priced Ithings meant Apple's profit this year adds up to nearly $500,000 per employee.

Metrics firm Pingdom found that Apple beat other big brand contenders including Google, Microsoft and Intel by a long shot. Pingdom based its figures on companies that are publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, looking at Apple, Google, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, Ebay, Adobe, Yahoo, Oracle, IBM, Amazon, HP and Dell.

Google came in second with $336,297 per employee, Microsoft was third with $244,831 and Intel came in at fourth place but with a much lower tally of $130,267 profit per employee. Despite posting record earnings this quarter, Dell got the wooden spoon with $26,321 per employee, just losing to HP's similarly unimpressive $28,096.

Apple's lead is substantial. The cappuccino company's profit per staff member is 125 per cent higher than Google's and nearly double Microsoft's. But back in 2008 the numbers were very different. Apple took third place with $151,063 behind Microsoft in second with $194,927 and Google in first place with $209,624. Dell swapped places, with HP coming in last that year.

Pingdom also looked at employee numbers between 2011 and 2008. Apple's workforce is much smaller but has more than doubled to 46,600, Yahoo has the same headcount and Microsoft is the only company in the last three years to have shed staff.

The 2,000 missing staff must have come from Microsoft's consumer hardware and smartphone follies that would have forced a smaller company to go bankrupt. Microsoft cancelled its Kin smartphones for yoofs almost before they even hit the shelves, its good looking Courier tablet never showed up and no one knows what's going to happen with all those leftover Windows Phone 7 handsets. Surely only its cash cows in the Windows 7 PC operating system and Office suite plus the Xbox are keeping it ticking over. µ

Apple's Agony Has Always Come Before Its Ecstasy
Apple shareholders have to be made of tough stuff. We've endured 4 discouraging months-- Apple's share price is right back to where it was on January 5. To add to the frustration, Apple delivered 2 strong quarters, soundly beating estimates and showing investors considerable growth in earnings and revenues. Q2 revenue and EPS were up 83% and 91% respectively. Q1 revenue and EPS were up 71% and 75% respectively. The share price didn't even beat money markets. Shareholders, I feel your pain. After all, I'm another suffering Appleholic.

Time to bail? Buy bonds? Slink into a corner and cry? No. For Apple veterans, this isn't anything new. I noted in a previous post that Apple tends to trade sideways for a frustratingly long time. To those newbies who haven't lived through a prolonged period in which Apple goes nowhere, let's go down memory lane. There have been 3 miserable periods to own the stock in the last 3 years, and each lasted 4 to 5 months.
....
To me, this year's weakness is reminiscent of these morose periods. Apple has been trading in the doldrums for a little over 4 months, shy of the 5 month sleep walk seen in the last two cycles. If history is any guide, Apple should start to reward long suffering shareholders. Apple's agony has been experienced preceding shareholder ecstasy, and this time should be no different. Apple's remarkable earnings should win investors over again.
