November wasn't good for retailers

CHICAGO (CBS.MW) - No surprises here: Consumers reined in spending last month at nearly retail store until the day after Thanksgiving, leaving retailers with a very mixed bag of monthly sales results.

And even though they shopped till the dropped on Black Friday, they headed home the rest of the weekend. That sent a chill through many retailers who depend on the November-December period for the bulk of their sales - and profits.

Though the industry results were dotted with surprisingly strong results - Gap being the standout -- the losers took center ring.

Wal-Mart (WMT: news, chart, profile), the big behemoth by every measure, fell below Wall Street's expectations and came in at the low end of its own projections. The parent of Wal-Mart and Sam's Clubs said same-store sales came in at 2.6 percent, a shade below the 2.7 percent analysts' consensus sitting at Thomson First Call.

Wal-Mart store were up 2.8 percent while Sam's edged higher by 1.3 percent.

Up-and-comer Kohl's (KSS: news, chart, profile) didn't even come close to meeting its First Call consensus of a 2.7 percent gain. The Menomonee Falls, Wisc.-based retailer said November comparable-store sales dropped 3.4 percent on top of last year's incredibly strong 25.9 percent increase.

"We are disappointed with our sales results for November," Chief Executive Larry Montgomery admitted. "With the later Thanksgiving, sales of holiday gifts got off to a slower start than we had planned."
