Mercados: Iraque: reparação de oleoduto vai demorar semanas
2003-08-17 12:02:54

.S. Stocks Are Little Changed; Power-Related Stocks Gain
Aug. 15 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks were little changed in the slowest trading of the year as the biggest electrical blackout in North American history shut businesses and transit systems in the Northeast.

American Power Conversion Corp. and United Technologies Corp. led a rally in companies that may gain business from the power failure.

The number of shares traded plunged as the blackout kept traders and money managers from their desks. Still, some investors said the failure won't disrupt the rally that has lifted the Standard & Poor's 500 Index by 13 percent this year.

``We expect that the market won't even be fazed by it,'' said George Deming, who helps manage $8 billion at Delaware Investments in Philadelphia. ``The market will continue to forge ahead.''

The S&P 500 rose 0.16 to 990.67 after fluctuating between a 0.2 percent gain and a 0.4 percent loss, the narrowest range this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 11.13 to 9321.69 and the Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 1.67 to 1702.01.

The Russell 2000 Index of smaller stocks gained 0.70, or 0.2 percent, to 471.92 amid a rally in power-related companies such as Quanta Services Inc. and Plug Power Inc.

For the week, the S&P 500 Index advanced 1.3 percent, its largest weekly gain since the five days ended June 6. The Dow added 1.4 percent and the Nasdaq jumped 3.5 percent.

Power Play

About 631 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, down 55 percent from the daily average for the past three months. Six stocks rose for every five that fell on the Big Board. Nasdaq Stock Market trading was about 688 million shares, 60 percent less than average. Trading on both markets was the slowest since Dec. 24.

``We saw very few large orders,'' said Mark Donahoe, head of trading at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis. ``It was very quiet with very light volume.''

Trading opened at the Big Board and the Nasdaq Stock Market as usual, at 9:30 a.m. New York time. The American Stock Exchange, the third-biggest U.S. equities market, opened at 3:45 p.m. for a 30-minute session.

American Power Conversion, the maker of electrical-surge protection and back-up power devices, jumped $1.82, or 12 percent, to $17.97. The advance was the largest in the S&P 500.

United Technologies, whose businesses include fuel-cell production and the sale and service of power systems, rose 48 cents to $76.48.

General Electric Co., the biggest maker of turbines for power plants, climbed 23 cents to $28.78.

``Power infrastructure in the U.S. urgently needs to be repaired and expanded,'' said Klaus Breil, who helps manage $5.9 billion at Adig Investments in Frankfurt. ``It supports our thesis that increased investments will boost the U.S. economy.''

Smaller Stocks

Eight of the 10 stocks posting the biggest gains in the Russell 2000 are in businesses that may benefit from the power failure.

Quanta Services, which installs power lines, gained $1.52 to $6.90. Plug Power, a maker of fuel cells, rose 98 cents to $5.16 and FuelCell Energy Inc. gained $1.51 to $9.40.

Shaw Group Inc., a construction company for the energy industry, rallied 98 cents to $8.26. General Cable Corp., an electrical wire maker, advanced $1.15 to $8.15.

Intermagnetics General Corp. jumped $3.47 to $23.91. The company said it is developing a device that prevents energy surges on power grids using superconductors.

C&D Technologies Inc., a maker of reserve power systems, rose $1.72 to $17.49. Advanced Digital Information Corp., which makes parts used in computer data-storage machines, climbed $1.90 to $12.12.

Utility stocks fell on concern they may need to increase spending on their infrastructure. Consolidated Edison Inc., New York City's utility, shed 19 cents to $39.31. FirstEnergy Corp., an Ohio-based utility that started rolling blackouts to conserve power, dropped 40 cents to $30.61.

MBNA Corp., the world's second-biggest credit card issuer, fell 99 cents to $22.57. The company sold $1.1 billion of new shares via Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Bear Stearns Cos. at $22 each. The stock is up 19 percent this year.

Protein Design Labs Inc. fell $3.65, or 25 percent, to $10.85. The drugmaker, which makes medicines based on antibodies, said it has so far failed to get Genentech Inc. to pay for another license to its technology.

The two companies have an agreement allowing them to exercise options to use the other's technology to make drugs. Protein Design said it believes that Genentech's Xolair asthma therapy requires a license under the pact. Genentech disagrees, Fremont, California-based Protein Design said in a statement. Genentech gained 97 cents to $77.25.

`Too Expensive'

Analog Devices Inc. fell 74 cents to $36.35. ``The stock is too expensive for our tastes,'' Smith Barney analyst Clark Westmont said in a note to clients. Westmont downgraded the maker of chips used in mobile phones and electronics to ``in-line'' from ``outperform.'' Analog Devices sells for 46 times this year's expected earning per share, more than competitors such as Maxim Integrated Products Inc.

Some investors who are optimistic about the outlook for stocks cited two government reports today as bolstering their view.

Consumer prices rose 0.2 percent in July, matching June, the Labor Department said in Washington. Industrial production at factories, mines and utilities rose 0.5 percent last month, more than expected and the most since January, the Federal Reserve said.

``Inflation will be very modest for some quarters and that sets a pretty good environment'' for stocks, said James Russell, director of equity strategy for Fifth Third Asset Management, which has $33 billion under management.

Futures, QQQs

S&P 500 futures expiring in September gained 2.80 to 990.50 on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Nasdaq-100 Index futures added 9 to 1254.50. The index, a benchmark for Nasdaq's largest companies, advanced 1.73 to 1253.63.

Nasdaq-100 tracking shares, known by their QQQ ticker symbol, climbed 27 cents to $31.17. The S&P 500 shares, called Spiders, rose 31 cents to $99.62.

The Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index, the broadest measure of U.S. shares, gained 6.70, or 0.1 percent, to 9547.51.

Dow Jones Stoxx 50 Index Has Biggest Weekly Gain in Two Months
Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- The Dow Jones Stoxx 50 and Stoxx 600 indexes posted their biggest weekly gains in more than two months, led by exporters such as Royal Philips Electronics NV and Siemens AG.

Julius Baer Holding AG, a Swiss bank, jumped 8.3 percent yesterday after saying the business climate has ``improved significantly.'' National Grid Transco Plc fell 2 percent after 1.25 million customers of its Niagara Mohawk Holdings Inc. unit were left without power in North America's largest blackout.

The Stoxx 600 rose 0.2 percent to 213.52, for a 2.7 percent gain on the week. The index has climbed for the past seven sessions, the longest winning streak since Dec. 30, 1999. The Stoxx 50 index advanced for the sixth day in seven, adding 0.1 percent to 2496.71. It rose 2.8 percent during the week.

The dollar gained 0.3 percent against the euro in the past five days, lifting the value of European companies' U.S. sales. It had its second weekly gain in three against the euro on evidence growth in the U.S. is improving. Europe's 300 biggest companies rely on the U.S. for about a fifth of their sales, according to HSBC Holdings Plc.

``We're seeing rays of hope,'' said Kevin Lilley, a fund manager at Royal London Asset Management who manages the equivalent of $800 million and recently bought shares of Clariant AG, the world's second-largest specialty-chemicals maker. ``My view is that the market's going to go up.''

The U.S. economy is showing signs of accelerating as Europe's flounders. The July rise in U.S. retail sales was the biggest in four months, and manufacturing expanded last month for the first time since February. Gross domestic product in the 12- nation euro region, meantime, was unchanged in the second quarter with Germany's economy, Europe's biggest, shrinking 0.1 percent.

Benchmark Indexes

Benchmark indexes advanced in nine of the 12 Western European markets open yesterday. Germany's DAX slid 0.3 percent, cutting its weekly advance to 3.4 percent. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 climbed 0.2 percent, for a five-day gain of 2.4 percent. France's CAC rose 0.5 percent. It gained 3.6 percent on the week. Greek, Austrian, Spanish, Luxembourg and Italian markets were closed.

September futures on the Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 Index of companies based in the 12 countries sharing the euro dropped 0.1 percent to 2561. The index gained 0.2 percent to 2548.86.

``We are positive for equity markets,'' said Andrew Hornig, chief strategist at F&C Management Ltd., which oversees $97.5 billion. ``We think they will go higher,'' he said, because economic reports and corporate profits will improve in coming months.

Exporters Climb

Philips, which gets more than 25 percent of sales from the world's biggest economy, advanced 7.7 percent in the past five sessions. Siemens, Germany's largest engineering company, added 6.1 percent. U.S. sales amount to almost a quarter of its total.

DaimlerChrysler, the world's fifth-largest carmaker, added 5.9 percent. It relies on the U.S. for more than 50 percent of its sales. Volkswagen AG, which makes about a fifth of its annual sales in the U.S., gained 12 percent.

Swiss Reinsurance Co., the world's second-largest reinsurer, led gains in the Stoxx 50 this week, adding 8.2 percent. The Stoxx 600 insurance index added 4.4 percent this week, the second- best performer among 18 industry groups. Automakers, up 6.4 percent, were the best performing industry.

Prudential Plc, the U.K.'s largest insurance company by premiums, climbed 6.5 percent. Axa SA, Europe's second-biggest insurance company, added 7.1 percent over the past five days after saying Tuesday that first-half operating profit unexpectedly rose 6 percent.

Munich Re, Allianz

Munich Re rose 1.4 percent to 97.80 euros yesterday, extending its gain for the week to 5.4 percent. Morgan Stanley advised investors to pare holdings in Allianz AG, Europe's largest insurance company, in favor of Munich Re.

Allianz fell 3.1 percent to 85.35 euros after the brokerage described the insurer's shares as ``fully valued.'' The shares have fallen 0.5 percent in the past week. Allianz has gained 4.1 percent this year, compared with Munich Re's 14 percent decline.

Julius Baer surged 8.4 percent to 376 Swiss francs. The company said it will cut costs by more than 11 percent this year after first-half profit fell 86 percent to 16 million Swiss francs ($12 million) from a year earlier.

Hagemeyer NV, which distributes industrial-safety products, led the week's gains on the Stoxx 600, adding 35 percent. The 102 year-old Dutch company advanced after saying Monday that banks agreed to discuss keeping open a 1.2 billion-euro ($1.4 billion) line of credit.

``The risk of bankruptcy has been holding back the share price but it has been wildly overstated,'' said Arjan Sweere, an analyst at Petercam Nederland who rates Hagemeyer ``buy,'' on Thursday. ``The valuation has been ridiculously low.''

Bang & Olufsen A/S, a Danish maker of luxury televisions and stereo systems founded in 1925, surged 18 percent yesterday to 213 euros after saying it expects pretax profit to climb as much as 14 percent this fiscal year and doubled its dividend. It gained 15 percent in the week.

Asian Stocks: Japan's Ito-Yokado, Aeon Pace Drop; Taiwan Gains
Aug. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Japanese stocks fell for the first day in six. Retailers such as Ito-Yokado Co. slid as an industry report showed Tokyo department store sales dropped, tempering optimism about growth in the world's second-largest economy.

``I'm avoiding retailers right now because of their business conditions,'' said Jun Terasaka, who helps manage the equivalent of $168 million at Toyota Asset Management Co. in Tokyo.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average shed 0.5 percent to 9863.47, snapping a five-day, 7 percent gain, at the 3 p.m. close in Tokyo. The last time the average rose for more than five straight days was a seven-day advance that ended on Jan. 22, 2001. The Topix index fell 0.1 percent to 964.78.

Elsewhere, Taiwan's TWSE Index climbed to a 14-month high. Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. gained after Dell Inc. said profit jumped on demand for server computers.

In Hong Kong, PetroChina Co. dropped on a Reuters report Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. reduced its stake in China's biggest oil producer in the second quarter. PetroChina said Berkshire Hathaway's holdings were unchanged.

Stock benchmarks rose in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia and fell elsewhere in Asia. Markets in South Korea and India are closed today for public holidays.

Standard & Poor's 500 Index futures expiring in September slid as much as 2 percent in Asian trading as the biggest electrical blackout in North American history yesterday crippled New York City and stretched as far as Toronto and Detroit. U.S. President George W. Bush ruled out terrorism as a cause.

Retailers

``If it's, as the news reports say, a power-grid failure, the reaction is likely to be temporary,'' said Simon Doyle, who helps manage the equivalent of $3.9 billion as a strategist at Schroder Investment Management Australia Ltd.

For the week, the Nikkei gained 5.8 percent, while the Topix rose 5.2 percent. Benchmarks had their biggest weekly gains since October as reports showed Japan's economy expanded 0.6 percent in the second quarter and consumer spending rose last quarter.

Still, retailers fell today after the Japan Department Store Association said sales dropped 4 percent in July. The report was released 30 minutes before the market closed yesterday.

Ito-Yokado, Japan's largest retailer by sales, fell 4.1 percent to 3,020 yen. Aeon Co., the second biggest, slumped 4.6 percent to 2,995 yen. The 115-member Topix Retail index has been the second-worst performing index on the Topix in the past month.

Nikkei futures expiring in September fell 0.1 percent to 9880 in Osaka and rose 0.4 percent to 9910 in Singapore.

NEC Corp., the world's sixth-biggest chipmaker, climbed 1.7 percent to 846 yen. Toshiba Corp., the world's third-largest chipmaker, advanced 1.9 percent to 426 yen.

Taiwan

Texas Instruments Inc., whose microchips run half of the mobile telephones sold last year, is the best stock to own to take advantage of a recovering semiconductor industry, said Hans Mosesmann, an analyst at SoundView Technology Group. He raised the shares to ``outperform'' from ``neutral.''

The TWSE added 1 percent to 5488.74, the highest since June 19, 2002. The August index futures gained 0.6 percent to 5501. The index rose for the first week in three, adding 4.9 percent.

Hon Hai, which supplies computer parts to Dell, added 1.5 percent to NT$133.50. Dell, the world's second-largest personal- computer maker, said shipments of servers, computers that run corporate networks, Web sites and e-mail, rose 27 percent in the second quarter. Profit jumped 24 percent.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest maker of made-to-order computer chips, rose 2.5 percent to NT$61.

``The computer industry has shown clear signs of a recovery,'' said Phil Chen, who manages Grand Cathay Securities Investment Trust Co.'s $46 million High-Tech Fund. ``Strong server demand showed businesses are in spending mode again.''

Makers of uninterrupted power supply equipment such as Phoenixtec Power Co. and Phihong Technology Co. gained as some investors bet the power outage in New York will boost demand for UPS systems. Phoenixtec jumped 6.8 percent to NT$41.10. Phihong added 1.5 percent to NT$20.90.

Hong Kong

The Hang Seng Index added 0.5 percent to 10,424.56, rounding out its biggest weekly gain in 10 months. The index's five-day winning streak is its longest in almost nine months. Its futures for August delivery gained 0.4 percent to 10,335.

HSBC Holdings Plc, Hong Kong's biggest bank, gained 1.5 percent to HK$102, the highest since March 12, 2001. The lender said it will cut 2.5 percent of its workforce in the city to save money.

Li & Fung Ltd., which helps Abercrombie & Fitch Co. source garments in Asia, added 1.7 percent to HK$11.95, after a U.S. government report on jobless claims showed initial filings for benefits were less than 400,000 for a fourth consecutive week.

``Exporters such as Li & Fung will continue to draw investors' attention because of the positive news from the U.S.,'' said Steven Leung, a director of institutional sales at UOB-Kay Hian Ltd.

Meanwhile, PetroChina fell 2.1 percent to HK$2.30. It dropped as much as 5.3 percent after Reuters reported yesterday Berkshire Hathaway held fewer shares in the three months ended June than in the previous quarter.

PetroChina said today Berkshire Hathaway still owns 13.35 percent of its traded stock, unchanged from late April when it began accumulating the company's Hong Kong-traded shares.

DIW: Desemprego poderá resistir à recuperação económica alemã

15-8-2003 20:25
