The number of initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell by 33,000 to a seasonally adjusted 521,000 in the week ending Oct. 3, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

It's the fewest initial jobless claims since the first week of January. The number of people continuing to claim regular state jobless benefits fell by 72,000 to 6.04 million in the week ending Sept. 26, the lowest since late March. The number of people collecting extended federal benefits rose by 68,000 to 3.79 million, not seasonally adjusted. Including those federal programs, the number of people claiming benefits of any kind in the week ending Sept. 19 was 9.36 million, not seasonally adjusted, down from 9.42 million in the previous week

U.S. consumers reduced their debt for the seventh straight month in August, the Federal Reserve reported Wednesday. Total seasonally adjusted consumer debt fell $11.98 billion, or at a 5.8% annual rate, in August to $2.46 trillion. Consumers have retrenched since the financial crisis hit in full force last September.

Credit has fallen in every month except January. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected consumer credit to decline by $12.5 billion. In the subcategories, credit-card debt fell $9.91 billion, or 13.1%, to $899.41 billion.

This is the record 11th straight monthly drop in credit card debt. Non-revolving credit, such as auto loans, personal loans and student loans fell $2.10 billion or 1.6% to $1.56 trillion.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch)

Alcoa Inc. reported a surprise third-quarter profit Wednesday afternoon, ending three straight quarters of losses. Net income for the aluminum giant was $77 million, 8 cents a share. In the year-ago period, Alcoa earned $268 million, or 33 cents a share. Sales fell 33% to $4.62 billion from last year's quarter.
The results topped Wall Street's expectations. Analysts had forecast Alcoa to lose 10 cents a share on revenue of $4.5 billion. Ahead of the report, Alcoa shares closed up 2.2% at $14.20. The stock has gained 26% in value so far this year, better than the 11% gain for the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

U.S. MBA Mortgage Applications Index Rose 16 Percent Last Week


Oct. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Mortgage applications in the U.S. rose last week to the highest level since May as near record- low borrowing costs boosted refinancing and sent purchases to a 10-month high.
The Mortgage Bankers Association’s index of applications to purchase a home or refinance a loan jumped 16 percent to 756.3 in the week ended Oct. 2 from 649.6 in the prior week. The group’s gauge of refinancing surged 18 percent and its measure of purchases climbed 13 percent.

Lower home prices, falling mortgage rates and tax credits to first-time buyers have shored up sales, helping stabilize the housing-market slump that precipitated the financial crisis.
Mounting job losses and foreclosures are a reminder that a recovery, in both housing and the economy, will be slow to develop.

“The bottoming process in the housing market is under way,” said Michelle Meyer, an economist at Barclays Capital Inc. in New York. “Residential investment should serve as a positive contribution to growth” in the third quarter.

The mortgage bankers’ purchase index increased to 306.1 last week, the highest level since January, from 270.4 the previous week, today’s report showed. The refinancing gauge jumped to 3,377.1, the highest level since May, from 2,857.3.

The share of applicants seeking to refinance loans rose to 66.3 percent of total applications last week from 65.3 percent.
