U.S. Steel swings to loss, slashes dividend
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- United States Steel Corp. said Monday afternoon it swung to a net loss for the first quarter, slashed its dividend by 83% to conserve cash, and plans to sell 18 million common shares to pay off existing debt.
U.S. Steel reported a net loss of $439 million, or $3.78 a share. In the same period a year ago, the company reported net income of $235 million, or $1.98 a share. Sales fell $2.75 billion from $5.2 billion.
On average, analysts had pegged U.S. Steel to lose $1.44 a share on sales of $3.2 billion in the first quarter, according to FactSet Research.
The Pittsburgh-based metals company is being hammered by fewer orders from auto makers and construction companies. Steel prices are also weak. U.S. Steel expects to post an operating loss for the second quarter based on its order book and costs to keep facilities idle. The company has had to curtail production, affecting workers.
U.S. Steel is concentrating production at Mon Valley Works near Pittsburgh, Pa.; Gary Works in Gary, Ind.; and Fairfield Works near Birmingham, Ala. The company employs about 49,000 people worldwide.
The steel maker slashed its quarterly dividend to 5 cents a share to save $116 million a year. The dividend will be paid June 16 to shareholders of record May 13.
U.S. Steel had paid a dividend of 30 cents.
In another development to bolster its liquidity, the company said it will offer 18 million in shares of common stock and $300 million in senior convertible notes in order to pay back outstanding amounts on its $500 million three-year loan due 2010.
U.S. Steel shares fell 8% to $25.50 in late trading. The stock has lost 82% of its value over the past year.

AmEx reports 56% drop in quarterly net income
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- American Express said late Thursday that first-quarter net income came in at $437 million, down 56% from a year earlier when the credit card company made $991 million. Net income attributable to common shareholders was 31 cents a share, versus 85 cents a year earlier. Income from continuing operations was $443 million, or 32 cents a share. American Express was expected to make 12 cents a share, according to the average estimate of 19 analysts in a Thomson Reuters survey. "While we did see some recent improvement in early delinquency rates, overall credit indicators reflected rising unemployment levels and the broad-scale weakness in the economy," AmEx Chief Executive Kenneth Chenault said. U.S. lending write-off rates on a managed basis could level off during the fourth quarter, but will rise in the second and third quarter, he added, while noting the company is still very cautious about the economic outlook. More cost cuts are planned for the second quarter, he said. AmEx intends to repay the government's investment of preferred shares and warrants, "if permitted by our supervisors and if supported by the results of the stress assessment," he added. AmEx shares rose 5% in after-hours action.

Yahoo to cut 5 percent of jobs
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc said it would cut 5 percent of its global workforce, after reporting a quarterly profit that met Wall Street expectations thanks to cost cuts that offset declining revenues.
The Internet company said it would also continue to implement unspecified "non-headcount cost reductions," so that it can increase its ability to make strategic investments and target hiring in its core operations.
"It's crucial that management adjusts the cost structure to the new growth (or lack thereof) realities; so margin protection is paramount to Yahoo right now," Youssef Squali, analyst at Jefferies & Co, said in an email. "We think there is potential outperformance on margins," he added.
Shares of Yahoo rose 1.7 percent in after-hours trading to $14.63.
Yahoo said last October that it would cut about one-tenth of its workforce, or about 1,500 jobs. The company finished 2008 with roughly 13,600 employees, and said it would take severance charges from the new round of layoffs during the second quarter
In the first full quarter under the leadership of Chief Executive Carol Bartz, Yahoo generated revenue of $1.58 billion, down 13 percent from the year-ago period.
Excluding traffic acquisition costs (TAC), Yahoo's revenue was $1.16 billion, compared with the average analyst expectation of $1.2 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.
The Sunnyvale, California-based company reported a net profit in the first quarter of $118 million, or 8 cents a share -- down from $537 million, or 37 cents a share, a year earlier. Wall Street analysts, on average, had forecast earnings at 8 cents a share, according to Reuters Estimates.
Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen told Reuters there were "still very dark clouds on the horizon" for the economy.
"I'll try to resist calling the bottom in any way," he said in a phone interview.
Yahoo projected that sales in the current quarter will range between $1.425 billion and $1.625 billion.

AMD posts loss, CEO doubts PC market has bottomed
SEATTLE (Reuters) - U.S. chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.N) on Tuesday reported a quarterly loss as it grapples with a dip in computer sales and warned it may be too early to say the technology market has hit bottom.
"I don't know how anybody can say that we hit bottom given the continued uncertainty that we have in the macroeconomic climate," said AMD Chief Executive Dirk Meyer on a conference call. "As a result of that, I would say that we are being cautious on our outlook."
Last week the CEO of Intel Corp (INTC.O), AMD's larger rival and the world's biggest microprocessor maker, suggested there were signs that the bottom in the PC market segment had been reached and the worst was behind it in terms of inventory and demand.
AMD's CEO was more cautious, saying outlook for the second quarter was "awfully hard to call."
Its shares fell 4.5 percent to $3.15 in after-hours trading from a close at $3.36 on the New York Stock Exchange.
REVENUE TO FALL FURTHER
The company did say revenue from its core microprocessor business would fall in the second quarter from the first quarter figure of $1.18 billion, citing macroeconomic conditions and historical seasonal patterns.
That means AMD will record a loss for the second quarter, as Chief Financial Officer Bob Rivet said the company needs $1.3 billion in revenue per quarter to break even.
AMD, the No. 2 microprocessor company, reported a first-quarter loss of $416 million, or 66 cents per share, compared with a loss of $364 million, or 60 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.
Adjusted for certain items, it reported a loss of 62 cents per share. Wall Street had forecast a loss of 63 cents per share, on average, according to Reuters Estimates.
AMD, which recently split its operations into chip design and manufacturing arms, reported revenue of $1.18 billion, a 21-percent drop from a year ago, but ahead of analysts' average estimate of $983.8 million.

CAT reports first loss since '92, slashes forecast
CHICAGO (Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc (CAT.N), the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, reported its first quarterly loss in 17 years on Tuesday, pulled into the red by more than half a billion dollars in charges from its wave of recession-triggered layoffs.
The company also slashed its full-year earnings and sales forecast, sending its shares lower in early trading.
Caterpillar, which has eliminated about 25,000 full-time and contract positions over the past few months, posted a first-quarter loss of $112 million, or 19 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier profit of $922 million, or $1.45 a share.
Sales fell 22 percent to $9.2 billion.
Caterpillar said it now expected full-year earnings of $1.25 a share, before restructuring costs, on sales of $31.5 billion to $38.5 billion. Three months ago, the company forecast profit of $2.50 a share, before restructuring, on sales of $36 billion to $44 billion.
Shares of Caterpillar were down 4.2 percent at $29.20 in trading before the market opened.

TI Q1 revenue, Q2 outlook top estimates
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Texas Instruments on Monday posted a surprise quarterly profit on better-than-expected revenue and gave a rosier outlook for the current quarter as demand for its chips appeared to stabilize.
Shares rose to $17.90, or more than 3 percent, in late trade after closing at $17.32 in the regular session on the New York Stock Exchange, after the company said business was better than expected in the last few weeks of the quarter.
"It appears that the industry and TI in particular are putting in a bottom for the March quarter," said Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Collins Stewart.
"We think the revenue will stabilize at these depressed levels and find its way back," he said.
TI forecast current quarter earnings per share of 1 cent to 15 cents on revenue of $1.95 billion to $2.40 billion. The low end of its revenue target was the same as average analyst estimates, according to Reuters Estimates.
Chief Financial Officer Kevin March told Reuters in an interview that TI's customers appeared to have completed efforts to reduce their inventories to meet weaker demand.
"In the last few weeks of the quarter demand got a little better in a few areas ... 3G base stations, notebook computers, some parts of the handset market and LCD based televisions," March said.
As a result, March said TI, which had used only about 35 percent of its factory capacity in the first quarter, will moderately increase production levels in the current quarter.
But March noted that the company was not ready to celebrate a turn around for the broader market, which includes everything from automotives to industrial equipment.
"Frankly, when we look out at the macro economic environment it remains unclear what direction the economy wants to go in," he said, noting that there were no signs of improvement in markets such as automotive or industrial.
The maker of chips for everything from cell phones to industrial equipment posted a profit of $17 million or 1 cent a share, compared with a profit of $662 million or 49 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Revenue fell 36 percent to $2.09 billion from $3.27 billion in the year-ago quarter.
It had forecast first quarter results ranging from a loss of 8 cents per share to break-even on revenue of $1.79 billion to $2.05 billion.
Analysts on average had expected a net loss of 4 cents per share on revenue of $1.9 billion, slightly below the midpoint of TI's guidance range, according to Reuters Estimates.
TI trails Qualcomm Inc in the market for mobile phone chips, where it has been grappling with share losses as well as weak demand due to the recession.

IBM revenue falls more than expected
NEW YORK (Reuters) - IBM's quarterly revenue fell by a bigger-than-expected 11 percent, as the slowdown in corporate spending hurt even one of the healthiest U.S. technology companies.
The news initially pushed IBM shares down more than 2.5 percent, but they recovered slightly after the company said on a conference call that IBM was more confident about its full-year outlook now than it was last quarter.
International Business Machines Corp's first-quarter profit beat Wall Street projections, helped by improved margins following layoffs and a shift to more profitable services and software products.
"These were decent results in light of the challenging economy. Certainly the top line is being impacted by the weak economy," said Andy Miedler, analyst at Edward Jones.
"IBM is managing the business well, focusing on expense control, and its movement to software and services is clearly evident in the increasing profitability. Net-net we think this is a decent quarter."
IBM said its quarterly revenue fell to $21.71 billion from $24.50 billion a year earlier. That compared with analysts' average forecast of $22.56 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.
Net profit for the quarter ended March 31 fell 1 percent to $2.30 billion, from $2.32 billion in the year-ago quarter.
Profit per share, however, rose to $1.70 from $1.64, as the number of shares outstanding decreased. Analysts on average were expecting profit of $1.67 per share, according to Reuters Estimates.
"Short-term bookings look a little weaker than everybody had hoped. That probably means that the next quarter will be mixed. The long-term guide looks solid," said Peter Misek, analyst at Canaccord Adams.
IBM has so far fared better than many other technology companies, thanks to its growing focus on software and services, such as outsourcing and technology support.
The company has moved to a more profitable revenue mix over the past decade, dumping increasingly commoditized hardware for software and services. Gross profit margin rose to 43.4 percent in the quarter from 41.5 percent a year earlier.
Wall Street has been hoping that the first quarter would mark the bottom of the downturn for the tech sector, eyeing an improvement in demand in the second half of this year.
Chipmaker Texas Instruments separately on Monday posted a surprise quarterly profit on better-than-expected revenue and gave a rosier outlook for the current quarter as demand for its chips appeared to stabilize.
"It appears that the industry and TI in particular are putting in a bottom for the March quarter," said Ashok Kumar, analyst at Collins Stewart.
Despite the fall in revenue, IBM reiterated its outlook for a full-year profit of at least $9.20 per share. "We remain ahead of pace for our 2010 roadmap of $10 to $11 per share," Chief Executive Samuel Palmisano said in a statement.
IBM now competes with the likes of Hewlett-Packard Co, and analysts expect more rivalry with Oracle Corp which is buying server and software maker Sun Microsystems Inc for more than $7 billion. IBM's talks to buy Sun broke down earlier this month.
IBM shares fell 1.4 percent in after-hours trade to $99.00, after closing at $100.43 on the New York Stock Exchange.
