Um enorme short squeeze na VW

Hedge funds rush to cover short positions

Hedge funds were scrambling to cover their short positions in Volkswagen after shares in Europe’s largest carmaker more than doubled following Porsche’s disclosure that it had increased its stake to almost 75 per cent.

These funds, which aim to profit from share declines by selling shares and buying them back in the market at a lower price, had been betting that the difference between VW’s ordinary shares and its preferred shares would narrow.

Preference shares pay a fixed-rate of interest but do not carry voting rights, while ordinary shares do have voting rights.

At the end of last year, VW’s ordinary shares were trading at €156.10, while its preference shares were trading at €100. The hedge funds bought preference shares and shorted the ordinary shares in the expectation that the spread between the two would close.

“This was meant to be a low-risk trade because the value of the preference shares and the ordinary shares have always been aligned,” one arbitrageur at a London-based hedge fund said.

But the opposite happened. Since the beginning of the year, VW’s ordinary shares have risen by about 230 per cent, valuing the car maker at €157bn ($197bn), while the preference shares have dropped by more than 60 per cent.

The problem for hedge funds was compounded yesterday when Porsche said it would lift its stake in VW beyond the level hedge fund managers had expected.

Hedge funds had expected Porsche to increase its holding in VW to just over 50 per cent. But instead, Porsche said over the weekend that it had increased its stake from 42.6 to 74.1 per cent – shocking hedge funds that had made large bets based on their expectations.

VW is a very tightly held stock because, alongside Porsche, the German state of Lower Saxony owns 20.1 per cent, leaving a very small free float of less than 6 per cent. Yet, as of October 23, about 12.9 per cent of VW’s ordinary shares were on loan for short sales – representing the highest proportion for any company on Germany’s 30-member benchmark Dax index.

Worse, index-tracking funds also hold stakes in VW and must retain their holdings so long as VW is a member of the Dax index.

With the short interest now almost twice the free float, it leaves hardly any shares for the hedge funds to buy back and close their positions.

Porsche said that its disclosure was aimed at giving short-sellers a chance to close positions “unhurriedly” following stock moves of the past two months.

But the irony of the statement was that it left hedge funds with no choice but to cover their positions in a panic, particularly at a time when nerves are so fragile.

Mech, não te esqueças que se a VW não tivesse subido tanto, algumas das restantes acções não tinham caido tanto, ou seja, houve muita gente a vender acções no Dax para comprar VW.

Não fiz as contas, mas olhando para a imagem , com tanta acção a cair aos 10 , 14 , 26% ...o dax era capaz de ter levado uma porrada de 12 a 14%!

Depois do HSI ter perdido esta noite perto de 12 % , algo que não acontecia "desde que o Mao Tsé Tung andava de fraldas" , o carro do povo é que veio salvar o dia e o Dax...

... e amanhã !? Quem salvará isto ?!
O "rumor da descida das tx. de juro " pelo Trichet e o Bernanke ?!

Sem comentários, mas isto está um barril de pólvora ...

Fast cars and fast money make a terrible combination. Mix in a banking crisis, an attempted takeover of Volkswagen and several billion euros of share options and you also get German takeover rules in urgent need of change. Although Porsche is not the only company to use cash-settled call options to buy a German rival by stealth – car parts maker Schaeffler recently did the same – it has done so with more spectacular effect than anyone else.

The mechanics surrounding Porsche’s attempts to buy VW are obscure because its option positions need not be disclosed. But the wheeling-dealing goes something like this: to increase its 35 per cent stake above 50 per cent, Porsche bought options over much of VW’s freefloat. The banks that sold these options meanwhile hedged their exposure by buying VW shares. Hedge funds, drawn by VW’s pumped-up valuation – 24 times forecast earnings, eight times as high as the sector average – then shorted VW as fast they could.

So far so normal. The rest is speculation. As hedge funds sold short their VW shares, that stock had to be bought by others; perhaps by Porsche, given its €10bn credit line. This buying more than countered the short-selling pressure, boosting VW’s share price. Facing growing losses from their positions, plus redemption calls from panicked investors, the hedge funds had to cover their shorts and buy back the VW shares they had just sold – again, perhaps, from Porsche. As the hedge funds’ losses mounted, so did the short covering. VW’s share price was squeezed to such heights that it became the 11th biggest company in the world, worth more than other European and US carmakers combined. Absurd. Even more absurd is that this false market is legal in Germany. Stranger still is that Porsche and its managers – even though VW’s share price has fallen – may well have made money from it all. Last year, the company earned €3.6bn from option operations – some three times as much as from cars – profits that will help it buy VW. Porsche used to be the emblem of a go-go City trader. Now it has become one.

Fez-s luz...

Estive até agora com uma curiosidade F. da P. para saber porque carga de água é que o Dax que esteve a cair 4%, do nada passou a ganhar 4% não sendo acompanhado pelo Stoxx50 e pelo Cac40.

Confesso que não me dei até agora ao trabalho de investigar, mas sem abrir o PC e apenas expreitando para o Blooomberg, assistindo á "PALHACADA" tive sempre a convicção que alguma das cotadas seria reponsável por isto. Mas qual pensava eu!

O nosso amigo Mec esclareceu-me sem eu precisar abrir a tabela do Dax... Bem hajas ó lobo!

Ao constatar ás 6:30 da matina que o Nikkei e os asiáticos somaram mais uma valente queda á de sexta feira, que já tinha sido histórica, se alguem sonha-se sequer chegar ao pé de mim e disse-se que o dax ia ganhar 4% depois de abrir a cair 4%, eu ligava logo para o Júlio de Matos a pedir uma ambúlância e uma camisa de forças para o malúco.

Estamos a chegar ao Natal é normal que ocorram palhaçadas!

ironia das ironias... com todos os títulos do Dax a cair fortemente, excluindo o do carro do povo, o índice chegou a cotar 4 e tal % verdes...

Só mesmo nos tempos comturbados e tempestuosos em que vivemos é possível uma coisa destas...
