No entanto..!!

Ford rides strong earnings in Europe and South America to make $100 million in 1st quarter

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. says it earned $100 million in the first quarter as strong results from Europe and South America helped offset the impact of a slumping U.S. economy that cut car and truck sales in its main market.
The company also said Thursday its latest round of early retirement and buyout offers netted 4,200 hourly workers, fewer than Ford had targeted.

Ford says it earned 5 cents per share in the January-March period. The No. 2 U.S.-based automaker lost $282 million, or 15 cents a share, in the same period last year.

PepsiCo Inc reported higher quarterly profit on Thursday as strong international results helped offset weakness in the United States resulting from the soft economy and rising commodity costs.
The maker of Pepsi-Cola, Gatorade sports drink and Lay's potato chips said net income for the first quarter was $1.15 billion, or 70 cents per share, compared with $1.10 billion, or 65 cents per share, a year ago.

PepsiCo and other companies that have large exposure to international markets are getting a boost this quarter as the weakness of the U.S. dollar versus many other currencies inflates the value of overseas sales when they are converted to U.S. dollars for inclusion in the company's income statement.

Motorola 1st-quarter loss widens as mobile devices sales plunge; forecasts 2nd-qtr loss

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (AP) -- Cell phone maker Motorola says it lost slightly more money in the first quarter as sales in its key mobile unit fell 39 percent.
Motorola says it lost $194 million, or 9 cents per share, on revenue of $7.45 billion. A year earlier, the company says it lost $181 million, or 8 cents per share, on sales of $9.43 billion.

Thomson Financial says analysts, on average, expected a loss of 7 cents per share on sales of $7.75 billion.

For the current quarter, Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola Inc. says it expects to lose 2 cents to 4 cents per share from continuing operations. Analysts expect a loss of 1 cent per share

Dow Chemical 1st-quarter profit hurt by higher feedstock and energy costs

MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) -- Dow Chemical says its first-quarter profit fell 3 percent on higher feedstock and energy costs, but still managed to top Wall Street's expectations.
The Midland, Mich.-based chemical company says earnings after preferred dividends slipped to $941 million, or 99 cents per share, compared with $973 million, or $1 per share, a year ago.

A $2.2 billion increase in feedstock and energy costs hurt quarterly results.

Dow Chemical Co. reports revenue grew 19 percent to $14.82 billion from $12.43 billion.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial forecast a profit of 94 cents per share on sales of $13.6 billion.

3M earnings drop 28 percent; profits down in consumer and office, display and graphics units

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- 3M Co., maker of Scotch tape and Post-It notes, says first-quarter earnings dropped 28 percent.

[b]3M says earnings fell to $988 million, or $1.38 per share, from $1.37 billion, or $1.85 per sha
re. Prior-year results include a one-time gain of 57 cents.

Sales rose 9 percent to $6.46 billion.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial, who generally exclude one-time items, forecast earnings of $1.35 per share on revenue of $6.34 billion.

3M says international sales were solid. Profit declined in 3M's consumer and office and display and graphics businesses.

The St. Paul, Minn.-based company affirmed 2008 guidance. 3M still expects 2008 earnings to increase at least 10 percent.

.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) - Espera-se que apresente lucros de 41 cents por acção .
Bristol-Myers Squibb's 1st-quarter profit dips on restructuring costs, but still tops forecast

NEW YORK (AP) -- Drug maker Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. says its first-quarter profit fell on higher restructuring costs, but adjusted results topped Wall Street forecasts.
The New York-based company says it earned $661 million, or 33 cents per share, compared with $690 million, or 35 cents per share, during the same period a year ago. Excluding charges, profit is 42 cents per share.

Revenue rose 20 percent $5.18 billion from $4.32 billion.

Thomson Financial says analysts, on average, expected profit of 41 cents per share on revenue of $5.12 billion.

Sales of the blood-thinner Plavix drove revenue higher. Overall, international sales for the company's products gained 16 percent to reach $2.3 billion because of a weaker dollar.

ConocoPhillips - Espera um lucro de $2,40 por acção .

ConocoPhillips (NYSE) today reported first-quarter net income of $4,139 million, or $2.62 per share. This compared with $3,546 million, or $2.12 per share, for the same quarter in 2007. Revenues were $54.9 billion, versus $41.3 billion a year ago.

Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC) - Esperam ganhos de 83 cents por acção .

Northrop Grumman

The Los Angeles-based company says it earned $264 million, or 76 cents per share, on revenue of $7.72 billion. That compares with a profit of $387 million, or $1.10 per share, on revenue of $7.31 billion in the prior-year quarter.

Thomson Financial says analysts estimated earnings of 63 cents per share on revenue of $7.7 billion.

The company says results were hurt by a charge of $326 million, or 61 cents per share, due to a previously announced schedule extension for its assault ship program.

Northrop Grumman now expects a full-year profit between $4.90 and $5.15 per share, down from prior estimates.

U.S. Initial Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Fell 33,000 Last Week

April 24 (Bloomberg) -- The number of Americans filing first- time claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week to a two-month low, a sign some companies have put firing plans on hold.

Initial jobless claims decreased by 33,000 to 342,000 in the week ended April 19, the Labor Department said today in Washington. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News forecast a gain of 3,000. The number of people staying on benefit rolls declined to 2.934 million from close to a four-year high of 2.999 million the week earlier.

U.S. Durable Goods Orders Ex-Transportation Rose 1.5% in March

April 24 (Bloomberg) -- Orders for U.S. durable goods excluding transportation equipment rose more than forecast last month, indicating demand from overseas may be helping factories weather the housing-led economic slowdown.

``Manufacturing is proving to be fairly resilient,'' Julia Coronado, a senior economist at Barclays Capital in New York, said before the report. ``The manufacturing sector is benefiting from some of the strength in the global economy that is helping it offset some of the weakness we've seen locally.'

New-Home Sales in the U.S. Plunge More Than Forecast
By Shobhana Chandra

April 24 (Bloomberg) -- Purchases of new homes in the U.S. plunged more than forecast in March to the lowest level in almost 17 years as stricter loan rules and falling prices caused buyers to hold off.

Sales dropped 8.5 percent to an annual pace of 526,000, the fewest since October 1991, from a 575,000 rate the prior month, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. The median sales price slumped 13.3 percent from the same time last year, the most in almost four decades.

"Stocks rise as Street parses earnings, oil prices decline
Wednesday April 23, 11:05 am ET
By Tim Paradis, AP Business Writer
Stocks rise as investors sort through earnings reports and as oil declines following report

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks turned sharply higher Wednesday after an increase in oil supplies sent energy prices lower and eased Wall Street's concerns that rising inflation will force consumers to cut their spending.

The rebound in stocks came a day after another record high price for oil helped send shares skidding. But selling in the oil market after the government reported a drop in inventories last week allowed investors to keep their focus on the stream of earnings reports arriving from companies.

Investors also took in the news that Liberty Mutual plans to acquire Safeco. The announcement sent Safeco shares surging and perhaps helped reassure investors nervous about corporate earnings. The $6.12 billion deal would create the country's fifth-biggest property insurer."

montanha russa!

Ufa!!

Delta's Loss Worse Than Expected

Stung by high fuel costs, Delta Air Lines reported a $274 million first-quarter loss and missed analysts' expectations for the period.

The loss was 69 cents a share, whereas analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had estimated a loss of 49 cents. Revenue, however, rose 12% to $4.77 billion and surpassed the forecast of $4.6 billion.

Stock Futures Shaky Amid Mixed Earnings

Stock index futures were indicating a mixed open for Wall Street Wednesday as investors were served with another round of inconsistent earnings reports.

S&P 500futures were down 4 points to 1377 and were a half-point below fair value. Futures on the Nasdaq 100 were down 3.5 points at 1891.50, but were more than 3 points above fair value.

Last time out, the major averages sank on a day that saw a new low for the U.S. dollar, fresh highs for oil prices and earnings of varying health. At the end of the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 105 points to 12,720, the S&P 500 gave up 12 points at 1396, and the Nasdaq Composite sank 31 points to 2377.

In the new session, earlier buying pressure moderated after Ambac reported a loss of $1.66 billion, or $11.69 a share, weighed down by $2.77 billion in mortgage-related losses. Shares of the beleaguered bond insurer slid 8.8%.

After the prior close, Yahoo! urned in a first-quarter adjusted profit that topped subdued analyst targets, but shares were still off 0.8% as investors doubted the results would be stellar enough to force Microsoft to boost its $44.6 billion bid for the Internet-portal operator.

Yahoo! has argued that the offer undervalues the company, but Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at a conference, according to Bloomberg, that it won't increase the value of the proposal.

On the other hand, Dow component Boeing climbed 1% after reporting that its first-quarter profit swelled 38% year over year to $1.21 billion, surpassing estimates on a per-share basis.

Also, the virtualization-software developer VMWare bounced 15.5% early thanks to better-than-expected sales.

Staying in the tech space, Broadcom surged 8.3% after the chipmaker after reporting that first-quarter earnings climbed 21% on above-par sales.

Also, health-care information provider Cerner outstripped first-quarter expectations and offered above-par 2008 guidance.

Yum! Brands, which operates restaurants including KFC and Pizza Hut, got past the mean projection thanks to surging revenue in China. The company also boosted its 2008 outlook.

Following the close, Apple will report its numbers.

Among commodities crude oil lost 41 cents to $117.66, and gold futures were down $6.40 to $918.80.

The U.S. dollar edged up against the euro, while ticking fractionally lower against the yen.

A Boeing vái confirmar o resto do dia .

April 22 (Bloomberg) -- Falling shipments at United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp., which together deliver 80 percent of packages in the U.S., show the economy is in a recession and unlikely to rebound this year.

UPS, whose domestic volume has outperformed the gross domestic product for almost a century until last year, said April 8 that deliveries dropped in the first quarter. UPS also said earnings for the three months through March will miss its previous projection by as much as 7.4 percent, just the third time the Atlanta-based company has made a new forecast that was below an earlier one.

``This is what a recession feels like,'' said Steven Marco, who manages $800 million including UPS shares at Marco Investment Management LLC in Atlanta. ``The trucks are not as full as they used to be.''

UPS's profit excluding one-time items may drop 12 percent to $902.9 million for the first-quarter, according to the average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Bloomberg .
