"Remember to Sell Into the Fake-Out Rally"

"Excuse me for not believing in the Nokia rally. That's the rally that comes from a tarnished company in Finland telling us all is well. Two weeks from now, it could tell us otherwise.

Nor do I believe in a rally that stems from Broadcom telling us all is OK. It's ironic, though, in Broadcom's case, that this quarter looks to be the best quarter it has had in a long time but all of its adherents and acolytes on Wall Street have jumped ship because of personnel defections. If you had downgraded Broadcom at $213, today is the day you would upgrade it. Of course, no one did that, so no one can.


Why don't I believe in a cell-phone or digital-age rally? Because these parts of the economy simply aren't as dominant or important as they once were. There are still plenty of people who live and breathe by these stocks and I know that a bunch of hedge fund managers were up at 5 a.m. to see the results as they printed for Nokia. But that crowd isn't large enough.

So let the cell phone and semiconductor stocks rally for a second day. It is still a countertrend that obscures what is really happening. Enjoy it.

But don't forget to do some selling. "
