bull & bear

"If You Have Something Good to Say, Don't Say It"

"Words like "challenging" and "difficult" flow out of the mouths of executives now the way "great visibility" and "phenomenal orders" did in a previous era. The "challenging" gang was out in strength at this Lehman conference.
Every conceivable type of chip growth is challenging. Nobody is seeing anything. To which I say, hold it. Something's wrong here. Not everything is bad. Some companies are having decent quarters in the sector. I think, however, that the lawyers have weighed in and said, "Stop forecasting anything positive. IT won't help and it can only hurt."
I say this because there really is an unprecedented amount of downbeat talk these days on all of the conference calls. Even the congenital optimists have been gagged. I wonder if we have not entered a new "anti-positive" era where there are more people saying negative things than there are negatives!
This thesis could make sense. The litigation-prosecution explosion of the last year has made it impossible to speak your mind without some sort of consequence. For example, if you are upbeat and, heaven forbid, you sell stock, I think your comments can amount to a put against you. If you are upbeat and someone buys your stock and then you have a shortfall, you can count on your words coming back to haunt you.
Don't get me wrong, I know things aren't great out there. But the pervasive gloom seems just too much. I am not a Pollyanna. I just know that the lawyers have spoken and you are seeing the results. "
