U.S. stock futures briefly extend gains on data ($COMPQ, $SPX, $INDU) By Mark Cotton
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- U.S. stock futures briefly extended gains Wednesday as investors cheered a larger-than-expected rise in durable goods orders and an upward revision to June's numbers. Orders for new U.S. civilian aircraft doubled in July, boosting orders for all durable goods by 1.7 percent, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Economists had predicted, on average, that total orders would rise 1.2 percent in July. Excluding the 5.6 percent gain in transportation goods, orders to U.S. factories for durables rose 0.1 percent in July after falling 0.6 percent in June. Durable goods orders for June rose 1.1 percent, revised upward from 0.9 percent. Dow futures climbed as much as 17 points, and were last up 13 points at 10,120. Nasdaq 100 futures were unchanged at 1,373.50.

Economists had predicted, on average, that total orders would rise 1.2 percent in July. Excluding the 5.6 percent gain in transportation goods, orders to U.S. factories for durables rose 0.1 percent in July after falling 0.6 percent in June. Orders for core capital goods increased 0.6 percent in July after gaining 1.4 percent in June. Shipments of durable goods increased 0.1 percent in July after rising 1.1 percent in June. Shipments of core capital goods increased 1.4 percent. Orders are up 12.4 percent year to date.
