Bin Laden Aide Surrenders In Saudi Arabia - CNN
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--A Saudi Arabian militant believed to be close to al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has turned himself in to Saudi Arabian authorities, Cable News network reported Tuesday.
The Saudi Arabian government confirmed the surrender and arrival in Saudi Arabia of Khaled bin Ouda bin Mohammed al-Harby, also known as Abu Suleiman al-Makky, the third militant to take advantage of the limited amnesty offered to militants on June 23, CNN said.
Al-Harby is believed to have been working with Osama bin-Laden in Afghanistan, according to CNN.
Al-Harby contacted the Saudi Embassy in Tehran from the Iran-Afghan border, where he was stranded, the Saudi Interior Ministry said earlier Tuesday. He was then flown to Saudi Arabia.
Al-Harby was seen sitting next to bin Laden on the video tape in which bin Laden talked about the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the U.S., CNN's Caroline Faraj reported. But she added that, on Sept. 11, 2001, al-Harby was in Saudi Arabia.
Faraj, CNN's Dubai correspondent, said al-Harby is known to have fought with bin Laden against the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s. In the mid-1990s, al-Harby lost a leg in combat, Faraj said.
Saudi state television showed al-Harby, who uses a wheelchair, being carried off a Saudi Airlines plane after he arrived at Riyadh airport Tuesday. He was wearing traditional white robes and Arab headdress.
