Enfim, whatever...

"Bottoms occur not because buyers step up, but because sellers become exhausted. They become exhausted either because they have raised enough cash or because they see merchandise at levels that they say they will feel foolish about if they sell.
I keep harping on the General Electric (GE:NYSE - commentary - research) story because it is a pure function of this moment. First of all, it is a discretionary buy. Lots of people took GE down because of the seemingly innocuous secondary that turned out to be totally toxic. But GE is pure. We know what it will earn, or at least we know the least it will earn, because the CEO was just on television telling us, and why risk coming on television this late in the quarter if you don't know?
Consequently, there is an objective "E" that is worth trying to figure out the "P" for. As we get closer to a 3% yield and 15 multiple, people grow reluctant to sell. Unfortunately, we don't know the cash issue; have the sellers raised enough cash? It directly impacts GE because GE is the easiest to sell.
I think you will know when we have a bottom. It will come on the second day that GE goes higher. That will be a signal to commit more cash if you have it, or to sell something that's high to buy something that's lower if you don't. That's what I will have to do now for my Action Alerts PLUS portfolio.
At times like this, my wife would come over to my quote machine and type GE over about 30 symbols. She said that beats constantly hitting it up and gets the point across. If it isn't in the pole position on your screen, I think you aren't a trader. "
