Cold boosts U.S. industrial output 0.8% in Jan.
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Cold weather kept U.S. utilities humming in January, boosting industrial output by 0.8 percent in January, the Federal Reserve reported Tuesday.
Output was flat in December.
Manufacturing output increased 0.3 percent in January after a 0.1 percent increase in December.
Capacity utilization rose to 76.2 percent in January from a revised 75.6 percent in December.
Utility output soared 5.2 percent. Within manufacturing, motor vehicle production increased 0.9 percent while production of high-tech equipment increased 2.6 percent.
Economists were expecting industrial production to increase 0.7 percent and thought capacity utilization would rise to 76.3 percent.
