U.S. Jan. ISM shows continued factory growth
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Factory activity in the United States stayed at a high level in January, the Institute for Supply Management reported Monday.
The ISM index rose to 63.6 percent in January from 63.4 percent in December.
This is the third month in a row, the index has been above 60.
The increase was in line with the consensus of estimates collected by CBS Marketwatch.
The number was below the market consensus of 64.
New orders slowed in January, the ISM said. New orders fell to 71.1 in January from 73.1 in December.
Prices rose to 75.5 in January, the highest level since March 2000.
The employment index fell slightly to 52.9 in January from 53.5 in December, but remained above 50 for the third straight month.

U.S. Dec. construction spending up on schools, homes
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Spending on schools and homes boosted U.S. construction outlays by 0.4 percent in December, the Commerce Department estimated Monday.
Spending on construction had risen a revised 0.5 percent in November, down from 1.2 percent previously.
For all of 2003, spending rose 4.3 percent to $898.2 billion.
In December, spending on public projects rose 0.6 percent while private-sector spending increased 0.3 percent.
Spending on private residential projects rose 0.9 percent. Spending on commercial projects fell 1.1 percent to the lowest since June 1997.
State and local government spending increased 0.8 percent while federal spending fell 1.8 percent.
Spending on schools rose 2.7 percent.

For all of 2003, spending rose 4.3 percent to $898.2 billion.
