Home sales rise in Dec., add to 2003 record
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Existing home sales rose 6.9 percent in December to 6.47 million units on a seasonally adjusted annual basis, the National Association of Realtors said.
The rise in December sales was much stronger than expected. Economists had forecast that sales would rise 0.3 percent to 6.08 million units.
On a year-on-year basis, existing home sales were up 8.9 percent.
For 2003, 6.1 million homes traded hands, beating the old record of 5.6 million set in 2002.
Sales fell a revised 4.7 percent in November to 6.05 million units, compared with the initial estimate of a 4.6 percent decline to 6.06 million units.
The rise in December sales was the biggest jump since January 2001.
The December sales level is the second-highest on record.
