U.S. Dec. housing starts highest in 20 years

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Construction of new homes in the United States expanded about 2 percent in December to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.09 million, the most in nearly 20 years, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.
November's housing starts were revised slightly lower to 2.05 million from 2.07 million.
Economists were expecting December's construction to slow to a 1.95 million pace.
For all of 2003, housing starts increased 8.4 percent to a 25-year high of 1.85 million.
In December, building permits increased about 3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.92 million.
In all of 2003, 1.86 million building permits were authorized, the most since 1972.
