U.S. Dec. jobless rate falls to 5.7%; payrolls up 1,000
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - The U.S. unemployment rate unexpectedly sank to a 14-month low of 5.7 percent in December, despite virtually no growth in nonfarm payrolls, the Labor Department reported Friday.
Nonfarm payrolls increased by 1,000, far below the 136,000 expected by Wall Street economists and the 181,000 expected by Wall Street traders.
Job growth in the previous four months was revised lower by a total of 66,000.
Manufacturing industries cut 26,000 jobs, while temp help companies added 30,000.
Average hourly earnings rose 0.2 percent to $15.50, bringing the year-over-year gain to 2 percent, the worst in 16 years.
Total hours worked in the economy fell 0.6 percent.
