Nasdaq May Sell London Stock Exchange Stake, Buy Back Its Stock
By Nandini Sukumar
Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Nasdaq Stock Market Inc., which twice failed to buy London Stock Exchange Plc, may sell its stake in the U.K. market for $1 billion and pay down debt.
Nasdaq's ``board of directors has authorized the company to explore alternatives to divest its approximately 31 percent stake in the LSE,'' the U.S. exchange said in a Prime Newswire statement today. ``Nasdaq will use approximately $1 billion of proceeds from any sale to retire senior term debt and intends to use the remainder to repurchase shares.''
Nasdaq's decision comes after Borse Dubai, owner of the United Arab Emirate's two stock exchanges, last week offered 27.7 billion kronor ($3.96 billion) for Sweden's OMX AB, topping a bid from Nasdaq.
