WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. consumer confidence rebounded in May, the Conference Board said Tuesday.
The consumer confidence index rose to 108.0 in May from a revised 106.3 in April.
The improvement was better than expected. Economists forecast the index to rise only to 104.9.
The present situation index rose to 136.1 from 133.5 in April, while the expectations index edged up to 89.2 from 88.2.
Lynn Franco, the director of the Conference Board's consumer research center, said confidence levels are consistent with slow economic growth.
Inflation expectations jumped in May. Consumers now expect a 5.5% inflation rate in the next 12 months. This is the highest level since last August.
