WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The services sectors of the economy grew for the 46th consecutive month in January at a slightly faster pace than in December, the Institute for Supply Management reported Monday.
The ISM nonmanufacturing index rose to 59.0% from 56.7% in December.
Economists were expecting an increase to 57.0%. Readings over 50% in the diffusion index indicate growth in the sector.
The new orders index was essentially flat at 55.4% vs. 55.6% in December.
The employment index fell to 51.7% from 53.2%.
The prices paid index fell to 55.2% from 59.&% in December .
