SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- The American Petroleum Institute reported a drop of 4.1 million barrels in crude supplies for the week ended Dec. 1. The Energy Department had reported a fall of 1.1 million.

Motor gasoline supplies were up 674,000 barrels, the API said, contrary to the government's reported fall of 1.1 million.

Distillate supplies were down 1.5 million barrels, the API said, vs. the 400,000-barrel fall reported by the government.
