Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Two units of Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd., the nation's biggest aluminum maker, halted trading of their stock in Shanghai ahead of plans to make more of the shares
publicly traded. Aluminum Corp.'s shares were also suspended from trading in Hong Kong.
Trading of the yuan-denominated A shares of Shandong Aluminium Industry Co. and Lanzhou Aluminum Co. will be suspended from today to Dec. 1, the two companies said in separate statements to the Shanghai stock exchange.
``Chalco shares were suspended because of the share reform plans in its two units,'' said Liu Qiang, board secretary with Aluminum Corp., also known as Chalco., by phone from Beijing.
China's government requires its companies to complete converting non-tradable shares into common stock by this year to boost private ownership and make management more accountable.
Companies so far have offered free stock and other incentives to holders of domestic-currency A shares to balance any loss from the increase in the supply of tradable stock. Holders of the foreign-currency H shares haven't received compensation.
Shares of Chalco, the world's second-biggest producer of aluminum raw material alumina, fell 0.8 percent to HK$6.25 in Hong Kong yesterday. The company has yet to sell yuan-denominated shares to make it listed on the Shanghai or Shenzhen exchanges.
This is the second time Shandong Aluminium has tried to make more of its shares publicly traded. Minority shareholders on Oct.
10 rejected an offer of 2.5 shares for every 10 traded as compensation. Chalco controls 71 percent of its non-tradable shares.
Shares of Lanzhou Aluminum, 28 percent owned by Chalco, rose 2.6 percent to 9.50 yuan yesterday. The stock has almost doubled in value this year, compared to a 76.3 percent gain in the Shanghai composite index. Shandong Aluminium shares rose 3.3 percent to 16.65 yuan on Monday.
