ECONOMIC REPORT: Continuing jobless claims lowest in a month
By Robert Schroeder, MarketWatch Last Update: 8:36 AM ET Sep 21, 2006

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The four-week average of continuing jobless claims hit its lowest level in a month during the week ending Sept. 9, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The four-week moving average fell by 5,500 to 2.47 million, the government said.

The weekly number for continuing claims fell even further, by 29,000 to 2.46 million, according to the Labor Department report.

The report suggests more Americans are working and may point toward inflationary pressures.

However, the number of Americans filing for first-time state unemployment benefits rose in the latest week, to 318,000. It's up 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 311,000.

It's the highest level of initial claims since Aug. 26.

Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were predicting jobless claims of 312,000 for the week ending Sept. 16.

The report comes one day after Federal Reserve policymakers decided to leave interest rates steady, at 5.25%.

Economists said the Fed could keep its finger on the pause button for a while. It was the second straight meeting with no change in monetary policy. It follows rate hikes at an unprecedented 17 consecutive policy-setting meetings.

The four-week average of new claims was unchanged at 315,000.

Jobless claims have fallen from their year-ago levels. A year ago, the four-week average of new claims was at 370,000. Initial claims were at 421,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was also unchanged at 1.9%.

Thursday morning, U.S. stock market futures pointed to a building of gains a day after the Fed's decision.

A report about leading economic indicators and a report from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve are scheduled for later Thursday.
