MIAMI - Government forecasters minimally reduced their prediction for the Atlantic hurricane season Thursday, saying up to nine hurricanes and up to 16 tropical storms are expected to form.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration maintained its estimate that three to five of the hurricanes would be strong. The original report forecast up to 17 tropical storms, with up to 10 becoming hurricanes.

Federal forecasters' move Thursday follows that of Colorado State University hurricane researcher William Gray, who slightly lowered his forecast last week.

Gray's initial projection called for 17 named storms and nine hurricanes, five of them intense. He revised it to 15 named storms and eight hurricanes, four of them intense.

After the battering by storms Katrina and Rita in 2005 there were widespread fears last summer of another powerful storm striking, but the unexpected development of El Nino — the periodic warming of Pacific Ocean waters that affects wind patters and tends to result in fewer Atlantic storms — helped dampen conditions.

No destructive storms hit the U.S. last year, but forecasters warned this year that El Nino is over, which could prompt conditions that encourage the development of additional storms.

So far, the season has been tame, but August typically marks the start of the most frenetic months of Atlantic weather.

Just as federal forecasters announced their initial seasonal projections in late May, Subtropical Storm Andrea developed about 150 miles northeast of Daytona Beach. The storm skirted the southern Atlantic coast but caused minimal damage.

Tropical Storm Barry formed on June 1, the first official day of hurricane season, and brought needed rain to drought-parched Florida.

Last year, there were 10 tropical storms in the Atlantic and just two made landfall in the United States.

A PTEN é actualmente uma drilling terrestre, visto que o oil&gás já é marginal nas suas receitas, dado o crescimento do número de rigs, actualmente 114 das quais 108 operacionais.
Mas as reservas terrestres, nomeadamente nas zonas principais onde operam, Texas e Novo México, estão a esgotar-se.
A grande procura está nas plataformas offshore.

Devem poder manter as distribuições mensais enquanto o petróleo estiver acima de $50 e o gás natural acima de $6. Este está barato pela ausência de furacões no GOM, mas a época deles ainda não acabou.

Outra que tenho é a Cheniere Energy Inc (LNG) que vai ser a solução futura do abastecimento de gás natural aos EEUU, com os seus 3 terminais de re-gasificação de gás liquido.
Ao contrario do petróleo, fácil de transportar e descarregar, há muitos excedentes de gás natural no mundo, mas tem sido muito difícil, dada a perigosidade destes terminais, obter locais adequados e ultrapassar as exigências ambientais e a resistência das populações residentes
Começaram o seu projecto em 1999 e agora têm 3 terminais em construção, o que lhes dá uma vantagem sobre os concorrentes que partiram depois:



O de Sabine Pass estará operacional brevemente. Já têm contratos de longo prazo com alguns grandes operadores entre os quais Gaz de France.
Esta abertura dará maior visibilidade à LNG que apenas é seguida por 2 analistas, e ainda está, obviamente, no vermelho. Mas falta pouco para começarem a entrar as receitas e virar verde. Entretanto a inauguração do Sabine Pass deverá passar nas principais TVs, alguns mais analistas vão "descobri-la" e isso pode ser o catalisador para novo arranque.
