U.S. July consumer sentiment 90.4 vs. 85.3 June

ECONOMIC REPORT: Consumer sentiment improves in July; University of Michigan index highest in five months

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- With gasoline prices falling and stock markets hitting nominal highs during the month, the mood of U.S. consumers brightened in July, Reuters and the University of Michigan reported Friday.
The consumer sentiment index rose to 90.4 in July from 85.3 in June. It's the best reading since February.
The index was at 92.4 in mid-July.
Economists surveyed by MarketWatch were expecting the index to read 92.0 for the final July reading. See Economic Calendar.
The expectations index rose to a five-month high of 81.5 from 74.7 in June, while the current conditions index rose to 104.5 from 101.9 in June.
All three indexes were below the mid-July preliminary readings, indicating confidence faded as the month went on.
Consumers were expecting inflation to rise 3.1% over the next five years, up from the 2.9% expected in June.
