WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Manufacturing activity in the New York area strenghtened slightly in July, the New York Federal Reserve Bank said Monday. The bank's Empire State Manufacturing index rose to 26.5 in July from 25.8 in June. This is the highest level since June 2006. The increase was unexpected. Economists were expecting the index to slip to 17.0 after it jumped from 8.0 in May. New orders rose to 26.5 in July from 17.2 in June. This is the fourth straight gain in new orders, which are at their highest level since March 2006. Inventories tumbled to -19.8 in July from 3.2 in June. The prices paid index fell to 34.6 in July from 42.6 in June.
