ECONOMIC REPORT: Weekly jobless claims hit highest level since April
By Robert Schroeder, MarketWatch Last Update: 8:43 AM ET Jun 21, 2007

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- First-time filings for state unemployment benefits rose to their highest level since April 21 in the latest week, indicating some slack in the U.S. labor market.
Jobless claims rose by 10,000 to 324,000 in the week ending June 16, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
The four-week moving average of new claims -- which smoothes out distortions caused by one-time events such as weather or holidays -- rose by 2,500 to 314,500, a six-week high.
Meanwhile, the number of people continuing to collect unemployment benefits rose by 39,000 to 2.523 million in the week ending June 9. The four-week average of continuing claims fell by 250 to 2.500 million.
The insured unemployment rate -- the percentage of those eligible for benefits who are claiming -- stayed at 1.9%.
Claims for the week ending June 9 were revised slightly upward, to 314,000.
Despite the elevated level, last week's initial claims are still in economists' comfort zone.
Economists say initial claims in the range of about 300,000 to 325,000 are consistent with healthy job growth of about 100,000 to 150,000 per month. Consistent levels over 350,000 would signal some weakening in the labor market, while a sustained drop below 300,000 could show further tightening in an already tight labor market.
Initial claims represent job destruction, while the level of continuing claims indicates how hard or easy it is for displaced workers to find new jobs.
Compared with the same time last year, initial claims are up about 4%. Continuing claims are up about 3%.
Later Thursday, reports are due about leading economic indicators and economic conditions in the Philadelphia region.
