Analysts at Bespoke In-vest-ment Group said a positive close for the S&P yesterday would entail "entering the summer months with a set-up that has typically been the most positive for stocks". Since 1950, the index has had an average gain of 6.28 per cent by September and only one down period out of nine after rising on the Friday before Memorial Day. In contrast, when the S&P has closed lower ahead of the holiday, "the average return over the summer was -1.23 per cent".
