WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- As gas prices climbed higher, U.S. consumer sentiment fell in early April, according to the Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index released Friday.
The index fell to 85.3 from 88.4 in March. It's the lowest since August.
Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected the index to slide to 87.0.
Stocks fell after the release of the report.
The current conditions dropped to 102.4 in April from 103.5 in March. The expectations index fell to 74.3 in April from 78.7 in March.
Consumers' expectations for inflation over the next year rose to 3.3% from 3.0%. They expect annual inflation of 3% over the next five years, up from 2.9% in March.
