ECONOMIC REPORT: U.S. weekly initial jobless claims rise to 329,000; Unemployment claims mark return to pre-holiday levels
By Robert Schroeder, MarketWatch Last Update: 8:40 AM ET Jan 4, 2007

WASHINGTON -- The number of Americans filing applications for unemployment benefits rose last week to its highest level since the beginning of the holiday season, indicating a weaker job market.
The number of workers filing for state unemployment benefits for the first time rose by 10,000 to 329,000 in the week ended Dec. 30, the highest amount since Nov. 25.
Jobless claims are often volatile during the holiday season, since some businesses hire workers part-time to meet extra demand.
The report comes a day before a key unemployment report for November is scheduled to be released.
Claims in the previous week were revised higher, to 319,000 compared with the initial estimate of 317,000.
The figures come a day before the Labor Department reports on December job growth and unemployment. Economists expect nonfarm payrolls to grow by about 103,000 in December, down from November's gain of 132,000. The jobless rate is expected to remain at 4.5%.
Jobless benefits are generally available for 26 weeks to workers who lose their jobs through no fault of their own.
The insured unemployment rate, representing the percentage of covered workers receiving checks, remained at 1.9%.
The four-week moving average for new claims rose 1,250 to 317,500. This is the highest level since the week ended Dec. 16.
The number of former workers continuing to receive state unemployment checks fell 76,000 to 2.44 million in the week ending Dec. 23. This is the lowest level since the week ended Nov. 11.
The four-week average of continuing claims fell 16,000 to 2.48 million, the lowest level since Dec. 2.
