Lucros da Merrill Lynch crescem 41% no terceiro trimestre e ascendem a recorde
A Merrill Lynch anunciou que os lucros do terceiro trimestre cresceram 41% para um valor recorde, superando as estimativas dos analistas. Os resultados foram impulsionados pelo aumento das receitas provenientes da negociação.

A Merrill Lynch anunciou que os lucros do terceiro trimestre cresceram 41% para um valor recorde, superando as estimativas dos analistas. Os resultados foram impulsionados pelo aumento das receitas provenientes da negociação.

Os resultados operacionais cresceram para os 1,94 mil milhões de dólares (1,55 mil milhões de euros), o que compara com os 1,38 mil milhões de dólares (1,1 mil milhões de euros), anunciou a empresa em comunicado.

Os lucros por acção, de dois dólares, superaram as estimativas dos analistas consultados pela Thomson Financial que apontavam para um resultado de 1,47 dólares por acção.

O resultado líquido da Merrill Lynch duplicou depois de ter registado um ganho de 1,1 mil milhões de dólares (879 milhões de euros) devido à venda da unidade de "mutual-fund" à BlackRock.

As receitas, excluindo o ganho extraordinário, aumentaram 19% para os 7,93 mil milhões de dólares (6,34 mil milhões de euros).

Chip giant Intel is set to announce third-quarter earnings on Tuesday afternoon. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expect the company to post a profit of 18 cents per share on sales of $8.62 billion. In the year-ago quarter, Intel reported earnings of 32 cents per share on sales of $9.96 billion. Prudential Equity Group remained "underweight" on the stock, according to an Oct. 11 report. "For the September quarter, we think that unit shipments for Intel came in at above-seasonal levels, but that pricing and mix were a challenge," it said. "Longer term, we remain concerned about capacity for the industry in general, and about margins and market share for Intel specifically."

Health care giant Johnson & Johnson (nyse: JNJ - news - people ) will release results for the third quarter on Tuesday prior to the start of trading. J&J is expected to announce profit growth of just 7% from the year-ago quarter, or 93 cents per share. Sales are expected to rise 6%, to $13.08 billion, according to analysts. Uncertainty in the medical device market and patent expirations for key drugs has weighed on the stock in recent months. Credit Suisse reiterated an "underperform" rating on J&J shares Monday and said investors are likely to focus on the status of Paliperidone, an experimental schizophrenia treatment delayed by federal health regulators late last month. "Paliperidone's final approval timing is critical, as J&J needs to convert its Risperdal franchise to Paliperidone before exclusivity on Risperdal is lost in June 2008."

Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) will report results for the fiscal third quarter on Tuesday after the closing bell. Analysts predict the Internet services company to log earnings of 11 cents per share on revenue of $1.14 billion, compared with year-ago earnings of 16 cents per share on revenue of $932 million. Earlier today, Lehman Brothers cut earnings estimates to reflect "more realistic expectations" for the company's near-term outlook. "We believe Yahoo! is now a show-me stock, and the market is likely to give Yahoo! little credit until the company releases its new search platform and improves monetization," the firm said.

Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) will report third-quarter results on Tuesday after the close of trading. The Wall Street consensus calls for the handset maker to report earnings of 34 cents per share on revenue of $11.07 billion, or respective growth of 13% and 17% from the year-ago period. Bear Stearns said last Friday it expects Motorola to announce strong results and maintained an "outperform" rating on the stock.


InterMune (nasdaq: ITMN - news - people ) shares jumped 30% in heavy after-hours trading following the biotech firm's announcement that it will team up with Swiss drug giant Roche (other-otc: RHHVF - news - people ) to develop its experimental hepatitis C treatment. The deal calls for Roche to pay InterMune $60 million upfront, with potential milestone payments of up to $470 million. In addition, Roche will foot two-thirds of the costs to develop the drug, code-named ITMN-191, which is expected to enter early-stage clinical trials by the end of the year. Deutsche Bank rated InterMune shares at "hold" with a price target of $18 on Oct. 2.
