"Wait, There's a Fed Meeting Today?"

"The Fed: big deal.

How do you like that? There was a time when this day would be the only day that mattered. There was a time when Alan Greenspan could move the markets up simply by timing the statement.

Today I can't find anyone who is even focused on the Fed meeting. I figured some of my "short" friends would be mongering rumors, something that would make us react negatively to whatever the Fed says.

Nope. Nobody's even paying attention.

For some, this lack of focus on the Fed must be truly unnerving. There are plenty of portfolio managers who simply knew one thing: If the Fed loosens, you buy. Oh, they knew some other things such as, if the Fed doesn't tighten, you might buy. Or if the Fed tightens, you wait a day and buy.

But we were certainly Fed-centric, with that Greenspan briefcase bit and the constant guessing of what the Fed would do.

I find it a relief. It was such a silly one-dimensional game that too many people could play and win. This atmosphere where many play and few win, frankly, is more realistic -- if not more sobering.

I think the Fed will remain on hold for some time. I think that's how it should be until economic activity turns up.

In the meantime, I'll pay attention, but don't ask me to take any action on it. Because unless the Fed does something really stupid, it's just not actionable. "
