A BlackBerry anunciou nesta segunda-feira ter aceite uma proposta de compra feita por um consórcio liderado pelo fundo de investimento Fairfax Financial, que ofereceu nove dólares por acção da empresa, num total que rondará os 4700 milhões de dólares, perto de 3500 milhões de euros.

Sem surpresa mas fiquei com a impressão que o valor é muito baixo e os tipos do fundo de investimento vieram aproveitar este preço de 9$ que tem sido o bottom line nas últimas sessões. Assim sendo tem que haver quem pague mais para ter a Blackberry

A canadiana BlackBerry está a preparar um plano de reestruturação que poderá eliminar cinco mil postos de trabalho, cerca de 40% da sua força laboral.

Esta seria a maneira da fabricante de telemóveis adequar a sua estrutura à realidade de um mercado em que tem vindo a perder quota e competitividade para rivais como a Apple e a Samsung, noticia o Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

O jornal norte-americano, que cita fontes próximas da empresa, refere que esta onda de despedimentos deverá afectar todas as áreas e irá produzir-se em diferentes vagas.

“Vamos proceder a mudanças na organização para garantir que teremos as pessoas certas, nos papéis certos”, disse ao WSJ um porta-voz da empresa, sem comentar, no entanto, o despedimento de 40% do pessoal.

A notícia surge cerca de um mês depois de a fabricante de smartphones ter anunciado a criação de um comité destinado a rever alternativas estratégicas para a sua viabilidade.

Há pouco mais de dois anos, a BlackBerry — que, tal como a Nokia, não conseguiu resistir à popularidade do iPhone, da Apple, e do Galaxy, da Samsung — tinha mais de 17 mil trabalhadores e uma quota de 14% do mercado norte-americano de telemóveis.

Actualmente, conta com 12.700 funcionários, a sua quota de mercado não vai além dos 3% e os prejuízos têm vindo a acumular-se — a BlackBerry acabou o exercício de 2012 com perdas de 646 milhões de dólares (cerca de 480 milhões de euros).

BlackBerry's (BBRY) stock is climbing after research firm Societe Generale upgraded the smartphone maker to Buy from Sell in a note to investors earlier today. WHAT'S NEW: After carrying out research, Societe Generale believes that BlackBerry's new devices are selling well. The company likely sold about 5M devices that use its BlackBerry 10 operating system in its first quarter, Societe Generale estimates. BlackBerry sold under 1M devices using its new operating system in the previous quarter, the firm noted. The company is slated to report its first quarter results on June 28. Societe Generale increased its 2013 earnings estimate for BlackBerry to 85c from 71c and has a $17 price target on the stock. TODAY'S PRICE ACTION: In early trading, BlackBerry rallied 55c, or 4%, to $14.10. WHAT'S NOTABLE: The company's stock has dropped 10% in the last three months.

Q10 sales are doing better than expected

Jefferies said its channel checks indicate that sales of BlackBerry's Z10 phone are slowing globally while Q10 sales are doing better than expected. The firm still believes BlackBerry will beat consensus estimates for both the May and August quarters and keeps a Buy rating on the stock with a $22 price target.

$BBRY Prem Watsa Thinks BlackBerry Shares Worth $40

One of BlackBerry’s major shareholders, Prem Watsa, thinks BlackBerry shares are worth over $40. In a brief interview conducted by Seeking Alpha’s Wilson Wang, Mr. Watsa indicated that he feels BlackBerry is doing all the right things in all the right ways and is a strong competitor in the smartphone market as it stands today.

Mr. Watsa was asked about Mike Lazaridis and his position within the company now that he has stepped down from the Board of Directors, “Thorsten [Heins] has done an amazing job in turning around the company. We think that Mike left the company because he knew that he left it in good hands, and that the team Thorsten has hired will help the turnaround effort. Mike also told me that it felt like leaving his son and letting him get married. He will not sell his shares and continues to support the company.”

Also when asked about the strength of the current BlackBerry brand Mr. Watsa indicated that, “If BlackBerry is able to maintain a 5% market share, then you have to roughly sell 80 million smartphones. They shipped 6 million last quarter, 1 million new phones and they are already profitable.” This is a big if, but the company fundamentals and battle plan have been executed very well in the past few months – and allow me to read in between the lines of what Mr. Watsa is saying right now – so if BlackBerry stays the course, they should meet or exceed this goal, while maintaining their profitability, very methodically. “We think the fair value is around $40 something and the time horizon is long-term as always, but we feel very confident in the management team,” stated Watsa.

And regarding the market share competition, Mr. Watsa has this to say: “Competition is going to be fierce going forward, I mean you got companies like Apple and Google with the Android, but BlackBerry has the security like no other. You can’t get the kind of security you want on an iPhone. But we think BlackBerry has its place in the market.”

Pois passa-se o mesmo comigo, mas aqui fica o que é possível.

A zona dos 18$/20$ será difícil de ultrapassar mas a sua quebra altera a tendencia da Blackberry.
