Wells Fargo Beats Analysts' Estimates; Shares Rise

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Wells Fargo & Co., the biggest bank on the U.S. West Coast, said first-quarter profit fell less than analysts estimated as the company limited losses from the decline in California home prices. The bank rose 7.5 percent in New York trading.

Net income dropped 11 percent to $2 billion, or 60 cents a share, from $2.24 billion, or 66 cents, a year earlier, the San Francisco-based company said today in a statement. Earnings included a $334 million gain from Visa Inc.'s initial public offering. Analysts were estimating Wells Fargo would earn 57 cents a share, according to a survey compiled by Bloomberg.

Wells Fargo was profitable even as competitors such as Wachovia Corp. and Washington Mutual Inc. posted losses because of the slumping West Coast housing market. The company is the nation's second-largest home lender behind Countrywide Financial Corp., which is selling itself to Bank of America Corp. after being crippled by bad home loans.

``This bank has the most conservative credit culture of any major bank and the strongest sales culture,'' said Robert Millen, a fund manager at Portland, Oregon-based Jensen Investment Management Inc., which held 3.3 million Wells Fargo shares as of Dec. 31. ``They've not gotten too much into these exotic instruments that are causing problems at so many other big banks.''

U.S. Consumer Prices Rose 0.3% in March; Core Rate Up 0.2%

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. consumer prices rose in March, driven by higher food and fuel expenses that indicate Americans will spend less on other goods.

The consumer price index climbed 0.3 percent, after no change the prior month, the Labor Department said today in Washington. So-called core prices, which exclude food and energy, increased 0.2 percent, also after no change. Both readings matched median forecasts in a Bloomberg survey of economists.

Inflation, combined with falling home values and mounting job losses, is leading to cutbacks in consumer spending that may push the economy into a deeper recession. Federal Reserve policy makers will likely lower the benchmark interest rate again this month as reviving growth remains their highest priority.
``Lingering inflation is little cause for caution when the Fed is so focused on trying to mitigate the credit crisis and the weakening economy,'' Michael Gregory, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto, said before the report. ``The Fed will cut rates again. They're not afraid to go for more.''

Estimates in a Bloomberg News survey of 78 economists ranged from gains of 0.2 percent to 0.7 percent.

Prices rose 4 percent in the 12 months to March, after a year-over-year gain of 4 percent in February. The core rate increased 2.4 percent from March 2007, after a 2.3 percent year- over-year gain.

BlackRock Profit Misses Estimates on Hedge Funds

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- BlackRock Inc., the biggest publicly traded asset manager in U.S., said first-quarter earnings fell short of analysts' estimates because of declines in hedge-fund and real estate investments.

Net income rose 24 percent to $241.7 million, or $1.82 a share, from $195.4 million, or $1.48, a year earlier, the New York-based company said today in a statement. Excluding some items, profit was $1.90 a share, missing the $2 average estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

BlackRock, run by Chief Executive Officer Laurence Fink, has increased profits for six straight quarters, though it hasn't been immune to falling global markets. The company was forced to mark down the value of co-investments in its own hedge funds and real estate pools. Most of the $35.2 billion in inflows during the quarter went to low-fee cash funds as investors fled stocks and bonds.

``BlackRock faces pressure related to a difficult market,'' Robert Lee, an analyst at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods Inc. in New York, said in an interview before the results were announced. Still, ``they're more well-positioned than any asset manager to thrive.''

Revenue rose 29 percent to $1.30 billion. The fund markdowns reduced earnings by 12 cents a share.

U.S. Housing Starts Slide to Lowest Level in 17 Years (Update2)

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Housing starts in the U.S. dropped more than twice as much as forecast in March to a 17-year low, signaling that declining construction will keep eroding economic growth this year.

Work began on 947,000 homes at an annual rate, down 11.9 percent from February and the fewest since March 1991, the Commerce Department said today in Washington. Building permits, a gauge of future construction, fell to a 927,000 rate from 984,000 the prior month.

Foreclosures are pushing down property values by adding to the glut of unsold homes, prompting buyers to hold out for better bargains and undermining new construction. The Federal Reserve will probably lower the benchmark rate again at its meeting this month to cushion the economy against the housing- led slowdown.

``Home construction is probably going to continue to fall right through this year,'' Mark Vitner, a senior economist at Wachovia Corp. in Charlotte, North Carolina, said in a Bloomberg Television interview. ``While we see a bottoming in sales in 2008, we really don't see an improvement until later 2009, early 2010.''

A separate report today showed that consumer prices rose 0.3 percent in March from the previous month, matching economists' forecasts. Excluding food and energy costs, prices increased 0.2 percent, the Commerce Department said.

Global Economic Outlook Improved in April, Led by U.S., Asia

The Bloomberg Professional Global Confidence Index rose to 14.5 from 13.1 in March. The measure Confidence in the global economy improved for the first time in five months in April after the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates to avert a recession, a survey of Bloomberg users on five continents showed.increased to 18.5 from 17.6 in the U.S. and to 11 from 7.5 in Asia. It declined in Western Europe. A reading below 50 indicates negative sentiment.

The Fed lowered its key rate by 2 percentage points this year, the fastest pace of cuts in two decades, after a slump in the housing market pushed up credit costs worldwide. At the same time, China's economy, the biggest contributor to world growth, expanded more than 10 percent for a ninth straight quarter, a government report showed today. While the European Central Bank has pumped money into the banking system, it has resisted lowering rates because of accelerating inflation.

Wall Street poised to advance after upbeat earnings

NEW YORK (AP) -- Wall Street was poised for a higher opening Wednesday after strong reports from Intel Corp. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. helped ease investor anxiety about corporate earnings and their impact on the economy.ADVERTISEMENT


JPMorgan, the nation's third-biggest bank, surpassed first-quarter expectations despite $2.6 billion worth of write-downs linked to the credit crisis. The bank also said it is well positioned with liquidity and capital for the year.

Intel Corp. late Tuesday reported a first-quarter profit that matched analysts' expectations, along with sales that topped projections. Intel also issued a forecast that kept profit-margin predictions for 2008 intact, and expects to protect its earnings despite falling memory-chip prices and fears about a slowdown in tech spending.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola Co. reported first-quarter profit rose 19 percent on a 21 percent increase in sales. The results easily surpassed Wall Street expectations.

The reports helped lift major indexes. Dow Jones industrial average futures added 46, or 0.43 percent, to 12,400. Standard & Poor's 500 index futures rose 5.50, or 0.41 percent, to 1,341.40. Nasdaq 100 index futures were up 23.00, or 1.28 percent, to 1,819.75.

In addition to dozens of earnings reports due during the session, Wall Street will also get economic reports on inflation, housing and weekly oil inventories.

Government data is expected to show that consumer prices resumed an upward climb in March due mainly to higher energy and food costs.
The Labor Department's Consumer Price Index, the federal government's primary inflation yardstick, is forecast to show a 0.3 percent gain from February, according to the consensus of Wall Street economists surveyed by Thomson/IFR.

Data on new home construction and building permit applications for March is forecast to show continued declines. The Commerce Department report is expected to show construction of new homes and apartments fell to an annual rate of 1.018 million units in March, a 4.4 percent drop from a rate of 1.065 million units a month earlier.

Oil prices that crossed $114 for the first time on Tuesday extended their advance ahead of a report that's forecast to indicate a modest rise in crude stockpiles. Light, sweet crude added 63 cents to $114.42 a barrel in premarket electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Gold prices rose, and the dollar was mixed against other major currencies.

Overseas, Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 1.20 percent. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.56 percent, Germany's DAX index was up 0.34 percent, and France's CAC-40 added 0.25 percent

NEW YORK (AP) -- JPMorgan Chase says its profit fell 50 percent in the first quarter, after the bank added $4.4 billion to reserves and lost $2.6 billion from the value of its loan portfolio.
The New York-based bank, which recently bought the collapsing investment bank Bear Stearns, reported earnings of $2.37 billion, or 68 cents per share, and $16.9 billion in revenue.

The profit is down from $4.79 billion, or $1.34 per share, in the first quarter of 2007. But it is above the average analyst forecast of 64 cents a share, according to Thomson Financial.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Coca-Cola says its first-quarter profit rose 19 percent on a 21 percent increase in sales.
The results narrowly beat Wall Street expectations.

The Atlanta-based company said Wednesday its profit was $1.50 billion, or 64 cents a share, in the three-month period ending March 28. That compared to a profit of $1.26 billion, or 54 cents a share, a year earlier.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting earnings of 63 cents a share in the quarter.

Revenue rose to $7.38 billion from $6.10 billion a year earlier.

The report from the world's largest beverage maker comes ahead of its annual meeting in Wilmington, Delaware.

Better than expected earnings from Johnson & Johnson and a rebound in the Empire State manufacturing

Major U.S. stock indexes opened higher Tuesday following a rebound in a gauge of manufacturing conditions in the New York region and better than expected earnings from healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and financial firms State Street (STT) and Regions Financial(RF).

Bonds headed lower as the February headline producer price index (PPI) soared 1.1%, the core rate rose 0.2% vs. 0.5% a month ago.
The dollar index rose. Gold futures were higher, while oil futures were trading near record levels.

In early trading Tuesday, the blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average gained 63.67 points, or 0.52%, to 12,365.73. The broader S&P 500 index rose 6.68 points, or 0.5%, to 1,335.00. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index added 10.37 points, or 0.46%, to 2,286.19.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) reported first quarter earnings per share of $1.26, vs. 88 cents one year earlier, on a 7.7% sales rise. The company cited strong performance of Remicade, Velcade, Risperdal Consta, and Concerta, offset by lower sales of Procrit and generic competition in certain markets for Risperdal, Duragesic, and Aciphex/Pariet. The company raised its 2008 EPS guidance to $4.40-$4.45, excluding impact of any in-process R&D, development charges, or other special items.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) agreed to merge with Northwest Airlines (NWA) in an all-stock transaction with a combined enterprise value of $17.7 billion. Terms of the deal call for Northwest holders to get 1.25 Delta shares for each Northwest share held. The merger is subject to approval of shareholders of both companies and regulatory approvals. It is expected that the regulatory approval review period will be completed later this year.

In economic news Tuesday, the U.S. Empire State manufacturing index improved to 0.6 in April from a record low -22.2 in March. The index was much stronger than the -17.0 reading that markets had expected. Employment was flat, after rebounding to 4.5 in March, while new orders rose to 0.1 from -4.7 the month before. Prices paid increased to 57.3 from 50.6 in March, while prices received rose to 20.8 from 15.7. The six-month ahead index slowed to 19.6 from 25.8 in March.

A JNJ não parece estar a ter grande reacção , estando inclusivé ligeiramente negativa .


A BSC ( Bear Sterns ) tambem diz hoje de sua justiça. Pelo que é do conhecimento geral , não se espera grande coisa , mas aí , os Mercados já terão assumido "todo o mal " e qualquer coisa boa , terá mais impacto .

O grande motor das reacções de curto prazo vái ser a Intel , que divulga hoje ( sem hora definida ) os seus resultados . Se forem bons é up, senão, não. Mas , eu aposto em bons resultados , em parte porque o Bank of America divulgou dia 10 um upgrade de "neutral " para "buy" e é provavel que já saibam alguma coisa .
