ISK e o carry trade

Caro XPTOO,

The Icelandic krona fell 0.4 per cent to IKr91.73 against the euro despite a surprise 25 basis point rise in interest rates to a record 14.25 per cent. Iceland's central bank said it could not rule out further increases as it battled to keep inflation under control.
Henrik Gulberg, strategist at Calyon, said that with the prospect of a further weakening in the krona going into the new year - the currency has lost 4.7 per cent against the euro in the last month - the central bank was using its only real weapon to prevent further depreciation.
"Whether they succeed is doubtful," he said. "The historical relationship between the Icelandic krona and the current account deficit would suggest scope for further weakness."
