Security software cos. rally on strong Q3, Cisco deal (SYMC, VRSN, MFE)

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of security software makers rallied sharply Thursday, following a batch of strong quarterly earnings and Cisco's purchase of Perfigo for $47 million in cash. VeriSign (VRSN) shares led the advance, trading up 13.5 percent to $24.96, after the company reported a third-quarter profit of 16 cents a share, after a loss of 13 cents a year ago. Sales rose 21 percent to $325 million, ahead of the First Call analyst estimate of $291 million. Symantec (SYMC) jumped 6.4 percent to $57.92, after a strong earnings report, news of a 2-for-1 stock split and a share buyback prompted an upgrade from Moors & Cabot. McAfee climbed 3.7 percent to $22.76
