Fairly Strong Quake Hits Tokyo Area

TOKYO (AP)--A strong earthquake struck eastern Japan late Wednesday, shaking buildings in Tokyo. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The 5.8-magnitude quake hit at 11:40 p.m. (1440 GMT) and was centered 60 kilometers beneath the earth's surface in Ibaraki prefecture the Meteorological Agency said.

There was no danger of tsunami - or huge waves triggered by seismic activity - the agency said.

Kyodo News service also reported earthquake.

Japan, which rests atop several tectonic plates, is among the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
