WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Orders for U.S.-made factory goods unexpectedly fell 0.1 percent in August and July's gains were revised higher, the Commerce Department said Monday. It was the first monthly decline since April.

Economists had been expecting August factory orders to rise 0.1 percent, according to a survey conducted by CBS MarketWatch.

Factory shipments rose 1.1 percent, unfilled orders rose 0.3 percent and inventories increased 0.5 percent.

July's orders were revised higher to 1.7 percent from 1.3 percent previously. Orders are up 11.8 percent year-over-year.

The decline in August factory orders was led by sharp drop in demand for transportation equipment and non-defense capital goods. Orders for transportation equipment fell 7.4 percent, while non-defense capital goods orders fell 7.7 percent.

Excluding transportation, orders for manufactured goods rose 1.3 percent in August, the fourth consecutive rise.

Excluding defense related items, orders for manufactured goods fell 0.2 percent in August after rising 2.2 percent in the previous month.

Orders for durable goods fell 0.3 percent in August, compared to an earlier estimate of a 0.5 percent decline. Nondurable goods orders increased 0.2 percent.

Durable goods, excluding transportation, rose 2.8 percent in August. Durable goods, excluding defense, fell 0.5 percent in the month.
