LONDON, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Britain's Ministry of Defence is preparing to hold a competition to select a key construction coordinator for its 2.9 billion pound ($5.27 billion) aircraft-carrier programme, the ministry said on Monday.
"We are preparing to run a competition and select a physical integrator to work on the carrier programme," a MoD spokesman said.
The MoD is building two new aircraft carriers for delivery in 2012 and 2105 under the programme, which has been hit with concerns about over-runs in costs and time.
French heavy-engineering giant Alstom said it would pursue a role in the programme, but refused to comment on a newspaper report it was a lead contender for the integrator role.
"This is among the opportunities that we are pursuing but we have no comment beyond that," a spokesman said.
The Sunday Times said Alstom, which was rescued by a state-backed bailout earlier this year, was one of five companies bidding for the physical integrator role.
An industry source told Reuters the first stage in the selection process would start "pretty soon", possibly this week.
BAE Systems was named preferred prime contractor on the ships in early 2003, but was locked in a fight with the ministry over bearing all the risk of cost overruns.
French defence firm Thales is designing the carriers.
