U.S. June ISM 61.1% vs. 61.5% expected

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Activity in the U.S. manufacturing sector slowed in June but remains strong, the Institute for Supply Management reported Thursday.
The ISM index fell to 61.1 percent from 62.8 percent in May.
Economists were expecting a drop to about 61.5 percent.
It's the eighth month in a row over 60 percent.
Most subindexes dropped in June, indicating a slower rate of growth.
The new orders index dropped to 60 percent from 62.8 percent in May.
The production index fell to 63.2 percent from 64.8 percent in May.
The prices paid index fell to 81.0 percent from 86.0 percent in May.
Readings over 50 percent indicate expansion.

U.S. construction spending at record high in May

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Fueled by historically low interest rates and led by private residential construction, U.S. construction spending rose to another record high level in May, the Commerce Department said Thursday.
Overall construction spending rose 0.3 percent in May, hitting a $988.5 billion seasonally adjusted annual rate.
Economists polled by CBS MarketWatch had forecast a 0.7 percent increase for the month.
Total private sector spending rose 0.4 percent in May to $751.1 billion, also a record.
Within this category, residential construction spending rose 0.8 percent to a record $532.3 billion in May.
Public sector spending fell 0.2 percent to $237.4 billion in the month.
