OIL
NEW YORK, May 17 (Reuters) - Stocks tumbled sharply on Monday, as the killing of a key figure in Iraq's new government heightened investors' concerns about geopolitical stability and helped send oil prices to fresh record highs.
The market bounced up from its worst levels of the session, however, after the U.S. military reported that it found an artillery shell in Iraq that was loaded with the nerve agent Sarin.
Lucent Technologies <LU.N> also spiraled downward after The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. regulators are expected to charge former Lucent executives for their roles in accounting problems at the company.
Technology stocks led the market's retreat, with the tech-packed Nadsaq Composite index <.IXIC> slumping to its lowest levels since October 2003.
The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 101.56 points, or 1.01 percent, at 9,911.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 12.33 points, or 1.13 percent, at 1,083.37. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 29.10 points, or 1.53 percent, at 1,875.15.
Geopolitical issues were at the forefront after a suicide car bomb killed the head of Iraq's Governing Council on Monday, dealing a major blow to the U.S. coalition battling a Shi'ite insurgency and a growing prisoner abuse scandal.
"The news of a bombing in Iraq that took the life of the appointed Iraqi leader and the continued rise in oil prices is taking its toll on the markets," said Harry Michas, stock index futures trader at manmarketmonitor.com.
Lucent, the most actively traded stock on the New York Stock Exchange, fell 20 cents, or 6 percent, to $3.08.
