U.S. ISM manufacturing index ticks lower in April
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Factory activity in the United States stayed at a high level in April, the Institute for Supply Management reported Monday.
The ISM index dipped only slightly to 62.4 percent in April from 62.5 percent in March.
This is the sixth month in a row that the index has been above 60.
The decrease was unexpected. The consensus forecast of estimates collected by CBS Marketwatch was for the index to rise slightly to 62.7.
New orders fell to 65.0 in April from 65.7 in March.
The employment index rose slightly to 57.8 in April from 57.0 in March.
The ISM price index rose to 88 percent in April from 86 percent in March.
This is the highest price level since November 1979.

U.S. March construction outlays up 1.5%
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Led by the public sector, spending on U.S. construction projects increased 1.5 percent in March to a record $944.1 billion seasonally adjusted annual rate, the Commerce Department estimated Monday.
February's spending was revised to a 0.4 percent gain from a 0.1 percent decline.
Spending is up 7.9 percent in the past 12 months.
Economists were expecting much weaker spending growth of 0.6 percent in March.
Public spending soared 5.2 percent, the largest increase in nearly four years.
Private spending increased 0.4 percent to a record $722.4 billion in March, led by the 0.7 percent gain in residential projects.
Outlays on private, nonresidential projects fell 0.2 percent.
