U.S. real consumer spending, incomes slow in March
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Real consumer spending decelerated in the last month of the first quarter, rising just 0.1 percent, the smallest gain in five months, the Commerce Department estimated Friday.
Meanwhile, real disposable incomes also increased 0.1 percent in March, the smallest gain in six months.
In nominal terms (not adjusted for inflation), incomes, disposable incomes and consumer spending all increased 0.4 percent.
The personal consumption expenditure price index increased 0.3 percent while core prices (excluding food and energy prices) rose 0.2 percent.
The PCE index gained 1.6 percent in the past year.
The closely watched core rate is up 1.4 percent in the past year, the fastest year-over-year inflation since February 2003.
