U.S. consumer confidence dips a bit in March
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- U.S. consumer confidence fell slightly in March, the Conference Board said Tuesday.
The consumer confidence index fell to 88.3 in March from a revised 88.5 in February.
This is the lowest level of the index since last October.
Economists expected the index to slip to 86.9.
The February confidence index was revised up from the initial estimate of 87.3.
The present situation index rose to 84.1 from 83.3, while the expectations index slipped to 91.0 from 91.9.
The near-term job outlook continues to trouble consumers, the Conference Board said. "The labor market not only continues to dampen consumers' present-day spirits, but it is also making them less optimistic about the short-term outlook," said Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board's consumer research center.
